    Cambelt change question regarding flywheel

    Hi everyone,

I have a v70 tdi (d5252t) doing a cambelt, water pump, fuel pump change etc. aux belt is off, and so is the starter motor. As the Haynes manual suggests sticking a bolt into the hole in the face of the flywheel before trying to undo the crank pulley bolt, my question is that what should I do since the hole in the flywheel is not visible at top dead centre? Should I put the bolt in just for initially undoing the bolt then get it back to tdc for the rest of the job? But even then it won't be locked unless I have the bolt in the flywheel.

So slightly confused as what to do. All advice greatly appreciated.

I havent done 2.5 tdi belts....yet! (Got an 855 tdi last weekend) I always use a socket and knuckle bar wedged and then flick the starter to loosen the main crank pulley bolt, Has worked most of the time, If the crank has TDC markings i personally wouldnt worry too much about locking it, When i do belts especially diesels on removal of the old belt i always back the crank a bit away from TDC (This eliminates any problems with interference when setting up) Set up the cam on the marks and then bring the crank up to TDC and fit the belt, Starting on the crank and fit onto the cam with no slack anti clockwise and lastly around the tensioner, Then with the marks lined up and the belt tensioned correctly i carefully rotate the engine at least 2 full turns by hand back to TDC and ensure the crank and cam marks are spot on and recheck the belt tension, I'm sure someone that has done a 2.5 TDI will be along.

Just do the rest of the tdc and mark the crank pulley up.U`ll have a pain of a job with the fuel pump timing cos u need a dial gauge to do that one its either 0.35mm or 0.55mm from the tdc.
