    V70 p0013 help

Hi guys my first post so I'll say sorry now if some one has already asked about this.

I have a 2001 v70 t5 auto and I have a engine system service message on my dash i have plugged it into my laptop and it's showing error p0013 I've looked everywhere to find out what this is I know what the code means " 'b' camshaft position - actuator circuit" well thats what it told me could any point me in the right direction on how to fix this problem.
I should also add i brought this car after my other v70 t5 was written off by the insurence "for a smashed headlight" lol and I have brought the car bk form them :-) so i do have a spare v70 sat in the garden for spares.

    Many thanx Rob

"B" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)

It's to do with VVT engine timing mate.

Is it an easy fix or is it trip to the dealer?

The fact you have to ask (as I would as well) means it's probably worth a trip to a Volvo specialist. Try to avoid Main Stealers for labour if you can because their rates are sky high.

It's either the VVT solenoid, or the VVT unit itself, there's no way of telling which even if it's plugged into VIDA. We had the same problem with the S60R, I went for the cheapest option first, the solenoid, about £120 and it's easy to fit yourself (make sure you get a new gasket as well), if that doesn't solve the problem, then you'll need a new VVT unit which costs a bit more, and is best fitted by a dealer/specialist, as they're a pig to set up, you'll also need a new cambelt, as once it's off the car, it's best to fit a new one.

removing the VVT solenoid is easy enough. You will need a new gasket & obviously a solenoid. 150 quid including discount from FRF Volvo (30 quid surcharge for the old unit) - for a new solenoid. I bought mine second hand from Stribo - seems to have worked out.

Remove the plastic cam cover at the OS end of the engine (2 x T30 torx screws). the cover is split towards the OS end. There are 2 spring clips either side, holding the top cover to the cambelt cover. Release these and lift the cover off.
There are four 10mm bolts holding the unit on - undo these.
Unplug the VVT solenoid from its harness.
Remove the old gasket, be sure to remove any old gasket fragments with a razor blade or emery paper, so as to ensure that the mating surface is clean.
    Some oil will escape.
    Fit the new gasket.
Fit the new solenoid - refit the bolts and tighten cross ways - torque to 10NM.
    Plug in the harness.
Start the engine - check for leaks.
    Refit the cover.

HTH (I did mine last week).

If you are local to me & can source the parts then I will happily fit it for you.

    Not always James

My local Dealer charged me £53 an hour to fit my Turbo. I wouldn't class that as sky high, in fact I'd go as far to say that is an exceptionally good rate!

That is cheaper than my local indie!!! I have never even asked my 2 local(ish) dealers what their rates are. Spose it can't hurt to ask.......might be less shocked than I would expect.

Discount the 'hourly rate' and then charge extra hours to make up the difference, oldest trick in the book that one I don't care what they say.

Main Stealer labour rates are a total rip off.

I wouldn't bother Paul, plus the Service Manager at my local Stealership has a bad attitude and you know what happens when I meet people with attitude problems - I ended up having an argument with the bloke across the service reception area. Thankfully the guys in the Parts Department are a lot more helpful.

They're not all like that - my local in Sunderland (Mill Volvo) have been very good. Maybe not the cheapest but will help out where they can. Last time I was there they did a diagnostic check on the Shark for free

edit: thinking about it, just recently I was driving an Audi A6 and the ABS light came on. I was in Sunderland also at the time. After clocking an R32 owner in a car park I went over with my best 'I'm not a weirdo smile', knocked on her window and asked her where was the best place for VAG...........diagnostics

After being 'maced' (kidding) I called into Wearside Audi and they stuck it on the machine, diagnosed a faulty brake pedal switch and whacked a new one on there and then. Didn't charge me labour and so the total cost was about a tenner plus cost of diagnostics. In and out within a couple of hours, all the while being served cups of tea and biscuits by nice ladies and ogling sparkly new Audis.

Sunderland might not be much to write home about but the main dealers seem OK sometimes getting the diagnostics done at the dealer saves some pain......

I don`t stick up for things i know nothing about!..........You should go to your local dealer when you can and get a rapport with them and only then will you realise that the indies are there for the same reason to make money!........BUT Volvo will ALWAYS insure what they do to your car and can be taken back with no qualms.

I have owned 12 Volvo`s since 1986 mainly two at a time and due to there reliabilty because i only ever use Volvo parts and services i have hardly ever had to book one of them in directly to the dealer.

Lipscombes in Kent have 3 dealers and they also run a club where one pays a lifetime fee of about £100 and for that you get 10% of parts a half price MOT and the servicing hourly rate is adjusted to how old the car is.
At one time the MOT was free. Because Lee`s motor is not that old he is not charged as much as i would be for my 1997 year old motor for labour rates.

    .................................................. .....

Getting back to the VVT...............make sure you get the latest gasket for the solenoid as it has a filter across it instead of the gasket with no filter at all......you may only get this at VOLVO but by all means get an older one from an aftermarket place and then re-new the VVT parts again in 6 months!

I only talk like this as i have been there in the past with non engine parts, aftermarket places only exist as the customer keeps coming back because a lot of the parts are not good quality.

James, James, James, James, James, you do seem to meet a lot of people with a bad attitude, including members on here, have you maybe thought that you're not as open to ideas and opinions, that differ to yours, as you could be.

We can only base our advise on the experiences we've had. It may seem like tarring everybody with the same brush but if you're dentist punched you in the face and charged you to fix your teeth, you'd say all dentists were animals (or words to that effect).
We had 3 brand new cars from the same local dealership, they have 5 showrooms in the same road and cover Nissan, Toyota, Peugeot, Renault, and Skoda. You'd think they'd be pretty good since they have a total of over 30 dealerships around the south. When we had problems with 2 of our cars (the same problem on both and then some) they were not interested. In fact, we had to threaten them with court action on several occasions. They damaged our cars while doing work they didn't need (and not actually fixing the problem) and had the attitude of a one man band outfit that simply didn't care.
Then we get the Volvo, DIM failed so I get the local dealership do sort it (different company to the one above) They fitted the DIM and didn't screw it in place, found nearly £1000 of "problems" which I sorted myself for less than £400 and had the cheek to trigger the "time for regular service" message. Oh, they also let me drive away with brake disks 3mm past their wear limit. They also argued long and hard that the steering limiter stops on Volvos weren't colour coded!

So like James, I wouldn't trust dealerships as far as I could comfortably spit a rat.

Westover group and Snows Group were the dealerships, if anybody wanted to know.

The only reason I'd have to go to the stealers I for gen parts. Saying that I've only had a power steering cap and ecu lid from them at which they're new price beats eBay's second hand lol
