Thumbs up Rear end tidy up

Ok, so today I decided to repair as best as possible, the gashes left behind by the angle grinding marathon last weekend whist changing my rear drop links. I filled the gashes in with some Chemical Metal, flattened it off and then decided to give some of the shoddy looking areas a coat of silver Hammerite to give the whole thing a superficial freshen up.

    Some 'Before' photos.....

And after a session with the Chemical Metal and Hammerite...

As you can see, I also flashed over the ends of the Anti-Roll Bar just to smarten it up around the drop links and to repaint it where I've filled it with the Chemical Metal.

I know you think we all slate you for the sake of it mate, but all you've done is spray over rusty metal, and flaking paint. I really appreciate how you're trying to keep costs down by doing it yourself, but a wire brush in a drill would have cleaned the surfaces up nicely for a coat of hammerite, all you've done is paint it onto paint that's already peeling off, and rusty metal.

I actually did wire brush it with a drill but it did diddly squit for the rust so I just gave up and painted over it.

Unfortunately I agree, an mot tester will now look doubly hard as it looks like your hiding something like corrosion etc.

Matt black from an aerosol after prepping the surfaces would look a lot more professional and less obvious.

Sorry James, I too feel slightly bad for being negative as it's seems that most of the time you can't do right for doing wrong when you post on here!

But whilst I think that filling those gashes with chemical metal was a good thing, the silver Hammerite just looks all kinds of wrong to me. What I was going to say was that it's probably fine if you are keeping the car for years to come and knowing it's done makes you feel better about longetivity, but if you were selling it and I had a look under there, I'd immediately wonder what the hell you or a previous owner had tried to hide. I'd be VERY dubious about it. And then Sperm1980 mentioned the MOT, and I've got say he's got a really good point there too. The whole thing screams "Look at me!" but in a bad way I'm afraid.

Ok, I've taken all your comments on board and it does seem there is an overwhelming sense of "no-no" over this silver paint. So, I'll take advice and get some black paint today and give it a coat of black this afternoon.

I'll save the silver stuff for painting the door and bumper trims in the summer..........

    Just kidding!

I will paint the underside black later on though.

Is no one concerned that the only reason this has been done is to hide an almost certain MOT failure? this is no better than filling a sill with newspaper and putting a bit of body filler over it then hiding it all with underseal. And it beggars belief that anyone would firstly post picks up of the damage, but then post up pics of the bodge to hide the damage. James, step away from the tools.

To me that is one big mess, sorry
Would have been better to cut that part off and weld on a new one or ever got someone to stitch up the cuts.
Then galvafroid paint and finish off the black waxoyl .
Why did you keep grinding when you were cutting into the metal.
I think Kia has a recall out just now to replace a part similar to this

So are you going to do it properly this time and get rid of the rusty flaky paint first or just paint over the silver?

Crikey, some flack coming my way for this, you'd think I'd cut the car in half and stuck it back together with Superglue.

Come on folks, my choice of colour scheme is as about the worse thing here, the cuts were caused by me not being able to see through the face mask I was wearing and something I'd have been heavily criticised for not wearing. What's better, a few cuts in the wrong place or losing ones sight (potentially). No brainer really.

And some of you should remember that you had to start somewhere at some point, and probably made loads of ££££-ups along the way that you wouldn't dare admit to. Worth remembering before you start ripping in to a guy who wouldn't even pick up a spanner 2 years ago!

I'll post pictures up of the black colour scheme later, and this will just be a paint over after a rub down to get off as much rust and silver as I can. The rust is very dense and not even my wire bush on the drill would take it off.

James it is not the colour... It is the preparation and execution that people are mostly commenting on. It's the sort of thing I'd do...
