Fitting Upper Engine Mount Small Bush (V70/S60 P2)

Fitting the Upper Engine Mount Small Bush was a little more complicated (though not difficult) than anticipated so I thought I would do a "How To" thread on the subject.

Tools and Parts

• 15, 17, 18, 19mm spanners and sockets

• Electric Drill and Drill pieces

• Hacksaw

• Large Hammer/Mallet

• Flat Headed Screwdriver

• Grips/Pliers

• Copper Grease

• Powerflex Bushes

Firstly, I used the spanners to remove the engine mount bar entirely.



I then removed the bolt holding the two brackets to the rear bush, allowing access to remove it.



Next, I drilled out the bush as the original is pressed in and is surrounded by a metal sleeve (like the wishbone bushes). Once it's drilled out enough I was able twist the centre rod out with a pair of plumbers grips.





Next, it was time to remove the metal sleeve, I did this my using a hacksaw to cut to an incision in two places within the sleeve to weaken it, and then gave the sleeve a smack on the edge with the flat headed screwdriver and my hammer until the sleeve dropped out (I used a 4LB Sledgehammer). Out came the sleeve.......



Once the sleeve was out, I was ready to fit the new Powerflex Bushing, this comes in two parts with a new metal centre rod. First I gave the bush and the hole in the engine mount bar a good coat of copper grease.



Fitted the bush to the bar, this was a reassuringly tight fit but went in by hand without the need for any tools. It doesn't have to by perfect at this stage as when it's clamped back on the the car the action of bolting back together will finish pressing the bushing firmly in to place.



Next, I reattached everything to the car, torqued the bolts up and now, along with the previously fitted top engine mount and strut brace tension bushes, I have a completely Powerflexed (Black Series) top engine mount assembly.

No, none at all however I 'know' it's done and I won't have to worry about those bushings again. With the Black Series, I'm finding once you fit the main player, the little bushes make no difference to the 'feel' but I know that they're all the same grade and in a kind of OCD way, I like to have them all the same.

Mr Peachey is giving me some priceless assistance on Saturday fitting the newly Powerflexed front Control arms to the car and having had a chat to Martin tonight on the phone, we're also going to fit the new Meyle HD Droplinks and with a bit of luck, change the ABS pump motor over which will solve my ABS/Tracs problem.

The MOT is due next week, if this car fails...........

What abs/tracs issue have you got? ive got a customer who has "Brake Pressure Sensor" fault code apearing from time to time, his is a 2005 v70 with dstc

No, none at all however I 'know' it's done and I won't have to worry about those bushings again. Vida diagnostics on 3 separate occasions have all thrown up the ABS pump fault code (Vida code is something like 0070). I tried Ed's (Leeds_Finest) suggestion to leave the pump and module in place but loosen off the fuse box, and take the two pin connector from the old pump out of the ABS Module and connect a replacement pump in. Then, started the ignition and the ABS lights went out confirming the Vida diagnostic, this worked for Ed and he had the same issue as me.

Then you'll get the problem sorted, you've come too far to do otherwise now.

In terms of being 'solid' underneath, I've now almost totally eradicated the original owners total disregard for suspension and running gear issues although the back end bushings haven't yet been touched (it's next on my priority list and will be Powerflexing that as well). The emissions test is my biggest concern, especially given the 'tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap' on the cold starts coming from the passenger side of the engine bay.

Brakes are in good condition and no major bodywork issues. I always check all the lights before the MOT to make sure I won't fail on the really stupid stuff like a blown bulb.

With all the work I've had done on the car I expect it to come out that Ministry Of Transport Test smelling of Roses next week.

On a foot note, I'm just glad alloy wheel condition isn't part of the test, if it was I might as well pick up that VT30 now...

The drill or drill piece? The larger drill pieces kept jamming and the drill itself only cost me about £20.00.
