    850 T5 and V70 T5 differences..

A quick scout around doesn't throw up any definitive answers, but what are the fundamental differences between an 850 T5 and a V70 T5? I'm struggling to find an 850 manual but there's a fair few V70's knocking around.
Did they do a V70R? The R bumpers on an 850 really set them off so would like to do the same to a V70!

    Any knowledge greatly appreciated

    Ben.

Body wise, Front wings and bonnet, front bumper are different, v70 bumper's and door handels are colour coded, interior is different ie door cards dash, sound proofing a little better on the v70's and they are a little heavier to.

    v70 t5's have 16t turbo, 850 t5's have a 15g turbo. Only the Manual 850R has a 16t turbo as standard

My sig picture is my 850 t5 estate with a Front 850r bumper.

    Thanks bud.

So the underpinnings are essentially the same? I'd want to up the ponies a bit too so are the same principles applied to the V70?

They had different management systems also, 850s were M4.3, first generation 70-series cars were M4.4 and ME7.

    From http://www.wothrline.com/main/main_e...erformance.htm

Not sure if this a fundamental difference but it is a difference anyway. And another thing, I might be wrong but just about all 70-series cars should be OBD compliant, socket under the front arm rest.

Last one I can think of: some of the 70-series T5s had 302 mm front discs as standard.

Some info on first generation (P80 platform) V70R:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_V...2.80.932000.29

There is also such a thing as an S70 but not very popular

There are hundreds of differences between the 850T and the V70 Turbo even switches in doors etc. ........some call the V70 a facelift model but if it is then the 850 was a vastly inferior motor!

The main difference is the B5234T3 engine with stronger pistons/rings and forged rods (but not H forged rods).

The intercooler is larger to help the 240bhp and the exhaust manifold is the same design as the ME7 jap one without jap written on it.

Although the early V70 still has the straight wastegate to the down pipe in my own opinion the exhaust gases still have to travel the same curve whether the angle is on the down pipe or the wastegate!!

There is also no back exhaust box on the early V70.

I think even the 70-series cars with M4.4 have the more restrictive manifold, the ME7 manifold is an improvement

Reading through it seems the V70 doesn't quite have that "burble" like the 850s, that's disappointing! That's what I love about them

Edit: Re-reading the second post, it seems it's the R that sounds different because of the exhaust manifold?

    Thanks for that!

So no need to change the rods like on the 850's? (I think)

Ive run 20psi for years without the need for forged rods, Good servicing and mechanical sympathy along with a correct Map is what saves rods! Certainly if you wanted to achive power much beyond 300bhp then it would be advisable to do the rods in either v70 or 850. imho

i am unaware of any engine differences between the 850 t5 and the pre me7 v70 t5, the manifolds are exactly the same also, this myth of stronger rods and pistons is unproven and they are as easily broken as one another

    Dammit that 850 looks good!
Am I going to regret not holding on for a manual 850 if I get a V70?

The difference Frankie is on the plastic timing cover:

    850 should read B5234T

Pre ME7 `97 V70 says B5234T3 it has all the benefits of an 850R engine plus being stronger.....Volvo in those years did not stand still in there development. The early V70 also has the 850R/T5R manifold the ordinary 225bhp T5 is different. The clutch is the same as well.

I should know as i only ever buy Volvo parts and not aftermarket ones where they may even sell three different clutches....the reason there are three it is probably "old stock" Volvo do not have old stock as they keep up with technology and also the price is about £245 which is about the best price.

You yourself may of bent rods in a V70 but i know of no other that has.......owners swop engines around from model to model just because they are 5 cylinder so if the label is not on the timing cover nobody knows what the engine is!!
