I don't know anything about H's & L's ( still learning ) but investigations last weekend showed my new boxes differences, to test I put the new box along side another m56 I've got here, I put both boxes into 5 gear and rotated the input shaft 3 full turns on each gearbox and noted the results, on the m56 that I believe to be 4.00:1 it turned the output shaft one full turn plus approx 1/2" passed its start point, on the 10v box after 3 full turns the output shaft was just short of 1 full turn. Thought I'd better check before fitting as, I'd have no idea if the 10v car I bought had,had gearbox change in its life and the wrong one fitted, wouldn't want to go to all that trouble to find no difference at all.

nothing like hands on experience, then you should be able to leave him to it when he does his. Got to do my first one now and the results will be gathered at avon at the end of the month

so the H or L denotes high or low ratios for 1st and 2nd gears only and made no difference to final drive and by your chart it looks like all 4.45:1 boxes are m56L's (learnt something today then)

Ok, not that I'd notice the difference between a H or an L, but I will notice the FD change

m56l has lower ratio 1st and 2nd gears

the m56h with 4.45:1 fdr makes all gears lower
