    2005 XC70 D5 Cat Advice

    Hi all. I've just been quoted £717 by FRF (exchange included) for a new cat! Are there cheaper alternatives that people have tried ie. chopping the cat out and replacing it with a new item or from a breakers etc?

    Ours seems to have been prised open and welded shut (by a drunk Albanian by the looks of it) for reasons I don't know!

    Internal collapse or blockage perhaps?

    It's blowing slightly and fumes can be smelt in the car. I could get it re-welded but I'd rather do it properly.

    Any advice would be great..... MOT in 11 days!

    Any good custom exhaust place should able to help you. Universal cats are around £100-200 depending on what you need.

    if you dont mind traveling up north id sort it for you
    s60 2.4 t5 eibach springs,up rated rear anti roll bar, poly bushed wishbones, poly lower engine mount, fmic, bmc air filter, 3" decat, 2.5" stainless exhaust,hlm remap 328bhp,

    Graeme, that's a great offer, just a shame about the distance! If I'd known of the problem earlier and the Mrs hadn't mistakenly thought her XC's MOT was in June, I'm sure I would take you up on your kind offer!     if your handy with a grinder youll be able to cut out the old shell and get a sports cat with a sleeve welded on and youll be able to clamp it in place. you should be able to do that for £100 ish. on a diesel the quality of the cat wont matter

    Just an update really. Managed to get a cat from Huddersfield Volvo Breakers. Great service; cheers guys. All fitted and sorted. Kept the old cat and my suspicions were correct; the former 'gash' owners had removed the internals! That's what you get for constantly running on city diesel I guess; not only did they bodge that but we know for a fact that the EGR & Turbo were changed at a cost of £1600, so I could've been much worse! Thanks to all who contributed to my thread ;-)
