Today I decided to take the car up on to the axle stands and have a prod around under the front end to look for wear and tear. The reason is yesterday I started getting some knocks from under the front end and I though this could be the heat shield above the turbo knocking the downpipe (I didn't secure it up properly because I wanted to have another go with the actuator rod). As a precaution I had a look underneath today and gave everything a good inspection and found nothing that would lead to such a knocking sound. As expected, there is slight play in the front control arm bushes and I'd like to change my ARB drop links for HD ones.
I secured the heatshield up and off the downpipe and couldn't replicate the knocking I heard yesterday but I'll see how it goes over the next few days. If the top mounts are knackered I'll be very annoyed as these have been on only a year and a bit, somehow I doubt it and I'll stick with the heat shield theory for now.
Whilst the wheels were off I couldn't resist giving everything a brush down with some soapy water and also copper greased the steering stops to avoid that clunk on full lock. By the way, I could see where my wheels have been rubbing the wheel arches so I hope this doesn't fail on the MOT despite the advice from Volvo, I can also hear the wheels squeaking against the arch on full lock - very annoying isn't it!
I made a video of the tapping sound from within the engine that generally seems to be at its loudest on a cold engine. See attached photos and video.
