    Brake disc sizes.. ?

    Hi All,

Just back from the friendly neighborhood dealer to pick up some stuff. While there I asked the parts guy if he could check on my serial what size brakes I actually have.... he checked and said my 2002 s60 t5 has 16 inch...... now that translates into about 406 mm and sound a bit strange. Would anyone know what is meant by 16 inch brakes? What discs would I need to get if I go and get new ones?
    Thanks,
    Marc

16 inch brakes on a T5? I have 336 and the 17" wheels barely cover the calipers!

I'm guessing he meant 16" wheel.

On an early P2 T5, it should (99% sure about this) have 305mm disks. If by some very slim chance they're smaller, they'll be 285mm but I doubt it.

A volvo dealer should be able to get the exact size from your reg/VIN. Dunno what he was playing at............
There are various sizes out there. My fronts are 316mm iirc.

Yours, being a facelift model has different brake sizes to the earlier models. the 316 brakes use the same caliper as the 305 on the older cars.

I am sooo relieved that I am no longer confused :-)
I also thought he mentioned wheel sizes.. and that I have 17 inch as of new. He said the discs where described as 15-16 and 16.5 inch....

no they were not confused, this is the Volvo way of specifying brake disc sizes.
the name of the size does not relate to the actual size in mm.

the 316mm disc caliper is not the same as a 305mm caliper.
it is the small one used on xc90 as well.

I thought the 285, 305 and 316 had the same caliper, and the 320 had some weird caliper that only goes on the 320?

I'ts been a long week and I can only bow to your superior knowledge Jamie (and the fact you have access to the Volvo parts database)

    yep, I looked on vida

I suspected they were different though as the size started to be fitted on the xc90, s60 and V70 at the same time.
