The AA are coming out with a flat loader this morning to take the T5 off to a Volvo Specialist in South Wales. I would have preferred to use GRN but the AA won't be able to accept a claim on the garage cover for reasons previously stated.

I'll let you all know what the official diagnosis is and where the damage sits but if I'm fully expecting it to be a mechanical failure of the DMF.

I've left notes in an envelope for the garage asking them to phone me before carrying out any work, to keep all the old parts aside for me as I may need them for warranty claims etc, and to "please" be careful not to damage any parts especially the CPS and the Charge pipe. Silly as that sounds, you all know what happened when the last garage had a go.

Fingers crossed for me please everyone.

The AA man came and to be honest I didn't like his attitude at all. I found him cocky and arrogant and he even decided to wipe the exterior door panels on the drivers side of the car with his hands "to look for dents and scratches". He looked quite offended when stopped him in his tracks and lambasted him for potentially working grit in to my paint work and ruining the finish. He was pretty inconsiderate if I'm honest!

Anyway, I've received a call from the garage, they've got the car and they'll advise me on the situation as soon as they've assessed it.

I have an answer back from the Volvo specialist, it's not what I was expecting either.....

The flywheel is still intact and hasn't failed! I've been told the clutch has physically disintegrated in to lots of pieces but the reason behind this still isn't clear.

I'll keep you all updated as much as I can.

Well now's your opportunity to have the garage fit a DMF anyway, regardless of the outcome. Don't be bitten twice!

I would guess the reason the plate broke up was because the DMF.the shock removing properties of it will have stopped working .
The rattling noise is it coming away from the stops at one end and then hitting the other end and the next weakest think is the clutch plate.
So you could be lucky and get a good deal with a new one,but they might ask for the invoice when you had it fitted then they might see a second hand DMF listed that could be a problem.
Good luck hope you get it back soon as your move could do with it.

    Updated (30/01/2014)

I've got a price for the whole job including labour and parts (new Flywheel, new Clutch, new slave cylinder)..... £1283 including VAT!

The man (Service Manager I think), says in all his years working on Volvo's he's never seen anything like it before. He also said the DMF is with Volvo specifications for tolerance and did not contribute towards the failure of the clutch.

As far as I can tell it's a clear cut warranty job and my AA Garage cover may also be useful.

I've authorised the parts to be fitted including a brand new flywheel and it should be ready by the end of the day tomorrow, I just have to sort the funds out now to pay for it.

Anyway, I'll get some pictures of the disintegrated clutch and post them on here.

There's a possibility that I may be able to claim back some of the cost through various methods.

Thats an excellent price for the job mate - especially from a volvo specialist. I did mine for £1100 and that was me sourcing all the parts (top spec ones mind) and a trusted local indy doing the work.

Just a bugger you've gotta do it all for a second time.

I know but the way it's being done this time should give me a lot of hassle free motoring. That is assuming the gearbox doesn't blow again!

Oh... did I just tempt fate?

    Lol.

I've been banging on about my gearbox for 3 years but to be honest, it's not gotten any worse in that time

I blame that thin oil James

I jest of course. It's sucky news. Makes me all the more worried about when my clutch or DMF eventually goes. To be frank I will be selling/breaking/scrapping the car if this happens in my ownership. Until then I'm trying to drive it gently most of the time.

when I did my clutch, I'd put too much cash and effort into it to just get rid and I was inspired by the thought of it lasting another 130k.

When I got my S60 D5 I got it with the clutch gone the owner could not afford to get it done.
Sold the car car 2 years later for the same money that I paid for it.
It is a big bill I think I was quoted around the same sort of price. Just to ask are they fitting new flywheel bolts as I remember getting some,I also did the crank seal at the same time.
