Dealer trying to rip me off???

Went into my local stealership this morning to buy some MTF so I can change the fluid in my M56 when I service the car in the next week or so. They told me I need to buy 12L of the stuff!! (@ £44.80 per 4L bottle!)

After I'd picked myself up of the floor, I told him in sure he's mistaken and 4L would do just fine! He argued until blue in the face that I needed 12L so I politely told him not to worry! 😳

So, blatantly attempting to rip me off or genuinely misinformed??

If someone could clarify the gearbox capacity for my own sanity, I'd be grateful!? '04 S60 D5 manual.

4L is what I bought to put in when I bought the car! That would have filled it, but it was not Volvo fluid. Decided after reading up that this time I'd change for proper Volvo stuff. Even if I buy 5-6L to allow some to flush it through...that's not 12L!

Maybe, but why £45 on oil to just to use as a flush?
Cheap for flush, then top up with good. I'd tell them to shovel it

12l is whats recommended to flush the box.

I just dropped the oil, filled it with cheap stuff, ran it for a couple of weeks, dropped it again (came out clean) and filled with good quality 75/90 full synth. I believe the capacity is 2.2l but you won't get that all out.

Main stealer are exactly that, they will rip you off however some parts are main dealer only or basics like filters are ok. Personally, I'm not comfortable using them and only use them for basics or specialist dealer only parts.

It was a parts guy I spoke to. I did ask if he was sure he wasn't quoting me ATF quantities and he was adamant.

I understand the need to flush, but a 2.1L capacity leaves 9.9L to flush!! REALLY?? Good one Volvo! What a license to print money.

Deathrider, did you actually fork out I'm guessing around £185-£200 (12L MTF + labour) for an MTF change??

On a side note, I've just bought air / oil / fuel filters. Genuine Volvo comes in around £85. Just bought Mann filters (Volvo filters are Mann filters!) £29.

As someone who has run a parts department (albeit for a JCB dealership) I would just like to say, what a crock of ££££. A decent parts advisor can save you as much as a decent mechanic can, conversely you'll get parts people that haven't got a clue, as you will with so called mechanics.

    Ah I see, phew!

So, rather than pouring 10L of oil through the box, I'll do as MRP says and drop / refill cheap / drop / refill Volvo!

You should speak for yourself James. My local Dealer has never ripped me off. In fact, I had them fit my recent Turbo because they were saving me £200 compared to taking my car to two other Volvo specialists. Not only did they save me money but they also did a first class job, Including washing and hoovering my car (which I never asked them to do)

    Go figure.
