    Bluetooth Adapter issues - '96 850R.

    Hey guys.

Just had a quick search but I can't seem to find anyone else having any grief with bluetooth adapters like I am.

I bought an ELM327 bluetooth adapter several months ago to try to access the codes and service light wipe option in the ECU on my '96 850R using Torque Pro on my HTC Desire HD, but while I can connect the phone to the adapter fine, I cannot get the adapter to communicate with the ECU.

Since then I have tried several other different (non cheapy blue eBay job) bluetooth adapters in conjunction with Torque, and I'm encountering the same issue every time.

    Anyone have any pointers?

    Cheers,

    Vard

go into the torque settings and under adaptor settings, look foe "choose Bluetooth adaptor" and select your device. then restart the app.

Tried that. Have also tried scanning for protocols, nada. :/

My first thought was that it must be a bad adapter, there's a lot of people who state that the cheap blue ones you find on eBay are badly made or don't have the right protocols, but I've tried two or three more expensive ones since then and they do the same thing, I can't fathom it, because there seem to be people who have got bluetooth adapter/Torque on Droid working on '96 850s, so it's got to be something my end rather than the ECU itself simply being incompatible...?

As far as I'm aware, the service light can only be turned off with a Draper 69007, or similar, unfortunately Draper have discontinued it, so you need to find someone to where you are who has one.

If you have access to another younger car post 2000 petrol engine try the adapter on that, if it works the issue is the 850 not being OBD-II compliant, just because it has the OBD-II socket means very little - Mike

have you paired and saved it to your phone? (not just connected) it needs to be paired and disconnected before you start torque. is it the full version of the software or the free demo? the demo can play up.

I'm using the cheapest adaptor on the market with no problems.

the first connection always takes a while, you'll see the adaptor logo flash fir a bit (on the torque screen) then the car logo will flash for a few minutes before it all sorts itself out.

Screwed on that one anyway then. I've got her booked into Johnson's Volvo in Swindon on Tuesday for a code reading/wipe & service light wipe, as I was going in to get a spare key cut and programmed anyway, and it turned out the other day that a friend of mine has wound up managing the parts dept. in there so I get reasonable prices on most things. But I want to be able to diagnose anything that comes up in the future so it's still worth me trying to figure this out tbh.

I've connected and paired the adapter and set it as preferred connection.

Full software, I did download the beta to have a quick look but was convinced within a couple of minutes it was worth a couple of quid lol.

you need to make sure the phone isn't connected to the adaptor before you open torque.

after that, I can't think of any reason for it not to work.
does torque say it's found the adaptor?

Isn't connected? Usually I plug in the adapter before even switching on Bluetooth on my phone, so no way it could be connected there tbh.

It does, Torque finds the adapter dandy and pairs fine, just won't communicate with the ECU.

I mean connected to the phone...

plug adaptor into the car, don't allow the phone to connect to it until torque starts, it should connect automatically.

if the adaptor logo is solid, not flashing, it means it's connected to the torque app. the car logo will then flash untill it connects to the ecu.

I used the Wi-Fi version of dongle which seems to connect just fine to my iPhone 5.

Saying that I have recently bought a cheapish code reader which I am impressed with, I will do a review if I ever get the car back from the garage !

The only 850 it will work on is the 850 AWD as that has the Motronic 4.4 ecu in it.
