we're actually saving money with the starlet. it paid for itself in about 3 or 4 months with the amount of fuel we didn't have to put in the sweed. admittedly, the initial outlay is the difficult bit.

To be honest, if I was going to buy another car I'd be buying a D5 as my daily runner.

No doubt you are mate, but there is no way I'd strap my little boy into a tin can like that. Fair enough it has an o.k. Ncap rating, but like the seat he's in, I want the best for him. The bonus is when he's not strapped into it, I can take it out on track, or the quarter mile, you should have seen the looks I got last year, ragging it around Castle Combe, with his seat still in the back.

You should have strapped a reborn doll in to his seat for an ultimate jaw dropping look from the crowd.

Haha, that would have been funny, his cuddly cow toy was strapped in instead, and was still smiling at the end.

Fortunately, the only trips he makes in the starlet is through central poole during the daily rush hours. Nothing moves faster than 10mph.

Any way... here's a pic of my shiny new filter...

Anybody know how to clean these things?

I can't see the whole of Smithy's filter, so it could be tucked away in the bit that's missing from the photo, or hasn't he got one? Smithy's is a bad example whether he has one or not, as it's parked up in a garage going nowhere.

Unless the filter is sealed and fitted with a freeflowing feed from the front of the car, it makes no difference at all as the filter will draw air from the path of least resistance, i.e. everywhere else.
So that bit of pipe you have cable-tied in your engine bay is merely adding weight.

Now you're just talking ££££££££, if cold air is being fed to the filter, then if not all of it, some of it will be drawn in, dropping the IAT.

What's the filter gonna be pulling? air from around it or dragging a bit of cold through 2' of twisted pipe? The amount of cold air that'll actually make it down that pipe will be a tiny fraction of what is going in through the intake. I doubt it'll make any difference whatsoever.

I have some 4" flexi in the shed, I'll be more than happy to log my ait's with and without it. I'll even tape it to the end of the filter to make sure it's pulling some air through it, rather than just pointing it at the side of the filter.
