I'll be looking seriously at a K&N induction filter but please feel free to suggest better filters if you know of any.

I also want to go down the silicone pipe route and uprated Intercooler in the long run but to be honest, I think I'm a fair way off that at the moment.
i had a K&N 57i, i wouldn't bother with them again. Going to a universal Pipercross foam cone made a bigger difference

I fitted that to my p1 V70 T5, and it might just have been a coincidence, but the maf sensor went immediately after fitting it. I now use JR panel and cones, and plan to stick with them. As soon as I notice my mpg is dropping, I clean them, which is more often than 10,000 miles.

interesting, my MPG has dropped by around 2 - 3 MPG, perhaps I should clean the air filter.

I reckon 5-7,000 and mine need a good cleaning. I re-oil as well, but very carefully, and I know some peeps don't re-oil.

Good chance it's the winter tyres, more grip = more drag.

With the mileage James does, I'd say the filter needs a clean.

Don't forget with the cold weather mpg drops anyway, as the warm up cycle is longer, and heater going full blast and heated rear window/seats takes power as well.

If I drive like a Granny I can squeeze 30 - 31 average mpg out of it at a push and that's resetting the trip computer for each trip. I usually average 27 - 28 mpg, the terrain around here is very 'up and down' though.

In the summer I could get 33 -35 mpg.

I'd say, if in doubt, clean the filter.

I have noticed a few flies building up on it.

Aside from the fact that you'd wreck your engine rather quickly, I wonder how much more get up and go the car would have initially, if the air filter was removed completely? Anyone ever tried it?

I know what you're saying makes sense, but I drive my R or T5 as economically as possible Mon-Fri for my work mileage, but then put my foot down more at the weekend. Although after saying that, as you know, I am getting a diesel.
