    lightened flywheel

Hello all. First thing big thanks to merc85.

Im facing a dilemma. Went for an mot on sat. Passed pretty easy. But I was told that there was a small oil leak near the gearbox. Though nothing of it.

On the way home the clutch pedal hit the floor. Oooopsy.

When speaking to gav. He suggested that a cause to the slipping clutch could br that the rear crank seal has gone due to the pcv being blocked. And the oil leak has got onto tge friction material of the clutch. Well it all needs to be done. The pcv was changed last year after I realised it was blocked.

So I been told that to get to the rear seal the flywheel must be removed. So im thinking whilst it is off is it worth getting a few pounds shaved off it.

Is anyone running a lightened flywheel. Is it worth doing
I don't break gearboxes. Just engine mounts.............

Clutch pedal going to the floor will have nothing to do with a leaking crank seal, are you sure are you sure it was an oil leak and not a clutch fluid leak?

Sounds alot like leaking clutch fluid or the clutch release bearing is gone.

Lightened flywheel sounds like a great idea if your replacing the clutch/main seal anyway

A 2.9kg saving using a TTV flywheel can't be a bad thing in my eyes. Engine braking is going to be a bit harsher but I'm sure your driving standards soon adapt to overcome it

ive never said or implied that the clutch pedal going to the floor was the rear main,

I didn't imply that you did mate , just the mot man said it had a leak by the gearbox, I was suggesting that the leak may not have been engine oil, but clutch fluid.

First thing to do is to find out what oil is leaking,

If it`s like water then it`s clutch fluid - but only if you have a internal slave

Otherwise it will only be engine oil.

If you go down the route of "shaving a few pounds" off of the flywheel you WILL need to get it re-balanced.

Hello. The slave cylinder on my car is at the front of the engine. The car does need topping up with oil quite regularly.

You have an external slave so the oil coming out of the bell housing has to be engine oil.

If the rear seal has failed the chances of engine oil get on to the clutch plate are very slim.

I had a TTV fly wheel!

Did ever make any difference? Not really sure? I never had a problem with it, but I did use an organic clutch and when it was remover after less than 10000 miles there was no sign of wear or damage.
But I could not tell you if it helped the engine rev more freely or not to be honest?
you would need to sit 2 cars side by side to see that.

I run an 850 lightened flywheel on my V40 with no issues.
Good company should be able to balance it for you too.

I think I had mine done by a company called SW autos a few years ago. They even supplied me with a second hand unit as once they inspected my old one it was found to be cracked..

i've got an RN crank, ARD light-weight pulley & TTV flywheel ready for the next engine. It all works out to 7.3kg lighter than the original lot, only another 1.2kg & it'd be the same as binning the original flywheel lol

What difference do you think there is with just the TTV fly wheel? like I said I didn't really notice to be honest, and it never gave me any problems!
I am not sure if it was the fly wheel or the amount of Torque I had but I managed to kill a brand new R clutch, after nearly 8k it was totally shot but started to slip just after 4k the car was running 327 bhp and 342lbft
