    Unhappy S80 T6 won't start

    Hi all,

I don't usually poke my head in this section very often, probably because the S80 usually just soldiers on while the rest of the fleet require regular beatings with a hammer and lots of swearing!

To the point - tonight, the S80 started fine, on the button as usual, but then pretty much immediately started to idle very lumpily, like it was maybe down a cylinder or two, with the idle ranging from about 1200 - 500rpm. This carried on for around 10 - 15 seconds before cutting out.

Now whenever I try to start it, it fires with the same lumpy idle and cuts out after maybe 2 seconds. Sometimes needing lots of cranking to get it to catch at all.

All through this, it absolutely stinks of petrol.

The car is a '52 plate S80 T6, geartronic, on around 130k miles.

Any help would be much appreciated, my daily is a D24'd 960 and being all mechanically controlled I can usually persuade it to behave when it plays up, but the T6 is a completely different animal!!

My Dad uses it as his "retirement daily" if there is such a thing, so it could do with sorting asap really... I don't think his back would be able to take clambering in and out of my lowered 480!!

I should probably add that it did this once before, about a year ago. My Dad called the RAC out, they had no idea so towed him home. I disconnected the battery for a couple of hours and it ran fine afterwards.
I then had the codes read a week or so later and nothing showed up, presumably whatever code was stored from the breakdown had been wiped and not come back.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Steve

Was kinda thinking that myself Smithy, but that wouldn't explain why it sorted itself out and ran fine for a year after resetting the ECU...

    Would it??

I think the only sure fire way is to have the codes read.

Hmm... I was trying to not think about the dreaded ETM!

I definitely need to have the codes read, trouble is it's undriveable at the moment...

Don't suppose anyone's got a reader in or around south Manchester??

    Cheers,

    Steve

I'd say coil packs, ETM failure usually isn't sudden. Sounds like more than one coil tho.
Have a good look round for split boost pipes, especially around the intercooler and throttle. Mine won't run at all with a pipe off.

Oooh... another one to try - unplug the MAF and see if it makes any difference.

Aye, I was thinking of unplugging the MAF to see what happens.

Who's 5 starred my thread? Is it great that my car's busted?!

Well, my old man had the RAC out to it:

"He said he'd unplugged the air-to-fuel meter thingy and it ran better" were my Dad's words when he rang me for the 700th time today.

I can only surmise that this means the MAF is goosed.

I'm getting it plugged in tomorrow anyway so we'll see what codes of expensiveness are in store!

    Cheers,

    Steve

It sounds very like a IC air leak to me.

My return hose kept popping off & the car would lumpy idle & then die.

Check all the IC pipes to check for a leak or a disconnected pipe.

The AA said that about Ray the 460 - they unplugged the MAF and it fired up. As you found out it was the coolant temp sensor wiring that was knackered and the MAF was fine. Just sayin - don't chuck the MAF in the bin yet! That flow chart above itsn't just about the ETM but yes needs a code reader to go right thru it.

Air leak is a good call maybe hard to find unless there is a hose hanging off or a hole like a clown's pocket...break out the carb cleaner and spray at arms length......

Ok, so a thoroughly decent chap from Salford came and plugged the T6 in.

From the codes it looks like the MAF has packed up, along with one coil pack.

Oh, my Yaw sensor's had it too... PLENTY of pennies to be spent on the biggest swede on the fleet then, just before Christmas!!
