Essentially a cat back adds a little more noise but no noticeable improvement to performance but a full system with downpipe and sports or no cat will add power as well as noise.
I've gone from standard to ferrita cat back to JT full 3" with down pipe and 200 cell cat, that is what the above comment is based on

With the earlier 850 turbos and the facelifted S/V/C70s prior to Volvo going over to the ME7 ECUs you could count on a well designed cat back contributing arround 5 bhp, a decent d'pipe in 3" nominal material a further 7/8 bhp.

Those earlier Motronic 4.3 and 4.4 ECUs had none of the component protection protocols present in the highly sophisticated later ME7 and ME9 ECUs so it was very important to get your callibrations correct, there being none of those protocols to monitor temperatures, pressures etc.. With the later ECUs it is essential to fit these replacement exhausts because otherwise you have the added aggravation of these protocols being invoked and the ECU pulling back on higher target outputs.

    Regards, Don.

I recommend a Jetex if you don't want to shout about it graham. My old exhaust was screwed but the performance difference was there straight away even though I had a hooge hole in my down pipe. Now my car is lovely & quiet but growls when I toe it.
It would only benefit your mods you've carried out already, I say do it with a 200 cel cat.

I ran a 200 cel ferrita DP on the same year ME7 engine as yours. I never failed an MOT emissions test with it.

I think the noise balance on the cat back is important but it is a personal thing. Too drony and the novelty will soon wear off. Too quiet and perhaps you'll wonder why you bothered.

I got a drone off my catback between 2000 and 3000 rpm, I'm gradually ironong it out. It was horrible, so bad it made my hearing distort. I was seriously considering putting the old exhaust back on.

It's nearly there, a few more alterations and I recon it'll be sorted. The rest of the rev range sounds exactly how I wanted it to, nice and deep on boost with a grumble-pop-grumble on the overrun and a nice gurgle on idle.

ive experimented with 3 or 4 systems as i cant stand it being to noisey in the cabin but i like the burble of the 5 pot outside. by doing this i learnt so much about materials build quality and so on. ive finaly got a system im happy with. no drones nice burble just how i like it and knowing i built everything from scratch make it so worth while. choose wisely befor spending your hard earned. if you dont like it, itll bug you so much youll take it off.

yes graham, to remove a cat completely on a car after 1993 is a direct mot fail. one must be physically present to pass (race or otherwise)

i'll let everybody else debate which is the best option/setup to install, but basically having a good exhaust will maximumise the benefits your other mods are providing
and improve throttle response if it includes a downpipe.
there is nothing wrong with the 2.5 inch diameter of the original exhaust, it is just the bends, boxes and cat that are restrictive - the jetex cat back system is also a 2.5 inch size.
-compared to other marques that might only have a 2 inch original exhaust.

It's not only about power, a standard exhaust will be restrictive so heat will build up. I ruined my cat & oxy sensors on the V70R in this way, with an agressive map and a standard exhaust. I'd say at least a cat back is needed. A downpipe and race cat will give not much more power but response will be better.

Respectfully I would disagree with you on the effect of a well designed and built d'pipe with good quality cat. We are talking in the context of earlier cars here and as I stated in my earlier post a decent cat/d'pipe combination will add 8bhp or so, a cat back 5bhp....or thereabouts.

    Regards, Don.

Going on these figures roughly £100 per bhp increase.....plus faster spool up etc
