    Remap advice please

Im new to the forum and when I introduced myself I mentioned I had not bought another T5 as planned but as S60 2.5T which gives 210 bhp as it was really low mileage, price was right etc. I was thinking of trying a remap, not because I hammer it and need more horsepower but more out of interest as to the difference it would make. Ive read about it on here from the various "names" but on using google have found re-mappers with rolling road set ups that offer cheaper services that give the same figures. For instance a firm called Remap Science in Bradford offer a remap and rolling road session for £150 and sometimes while you get what you pay for, is it actually rocket science remapping a car for road use? I am wondering what advice anyone would have from experience as to whether the extra 40bhp or so that I would gain would make a big difference, is the extra torque the most noticeable difference, where would people recommend (bearing in mind I live in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire) and so on? I know there is an argument for saying that if I wanted more horses I could have bought a T5 but that's missing the point for me really. I think Ive a smaller turbo that the T5 so it might be quicker initial pick up but less further up Im not sure. There doesn't seem much info on this 2.5 engine available.

first of all i wouldnt touch remap science with a barge pole, my car had one of their so called custom maps and it was crap, i put mine back to standard volvo software, as your in York/Yorkshire give AET Motorsport a call as far as im concerned they are the best in the area, if not one of the best in the country.

Nosh on here and other forums has a S40T5 2.5 which produced 420bhp before cracking its liners, contact him for his spec and his car has been mapped by AET motorsport: http://www.aet-motorsport.co.uk/contact

This is certainly where mine will be going once i have my new engine and box fitted next year

on the other hand a tuner should advise to uprate the engine befor letting a remap destroy it. its well known the 2.5s are a weak engine

Interesting about remap science. AET is not too far from me so I have emailed them thanks for that info. Graeme in what way is the engine weak please? In what way do you mean uprating the engine? If its going to cost loads its not really going to be worth bothering I don't think.

the 2.3 and 2.5 share the same block but the cylinder liners are thinner and weaker. when running a high level of boost like nosh's car its like having a ticking time bomb with out shimming or fitting uprated linners you will have nothing to worry out on your car, your only looking at small tweaks.

I did read about that when I looked at a S60R and that, along with the angle gear issues, put me off. Also, for the money I was wanting to spend, it had to be higher miles and a little more worn. the car Ive ended up with is like new really.

While i don't believe that everyone with a volvo has to go to a volvo specialist for a remap, you must do some research and find out other peoples experiences. Obviously this will be easier to with the volvo tuners as many people on here or t5d5, etc will have used them.

I doubt you would have any issues with your liners as its just the lpt. Also there is more to remaps than just outright numbers. They can make a big difference to the character of the engine by making it more responsive.

I'd have thought your car would go pretty decent with a remap, but you really should use 98 oct fuel or above to get the best out of it.

A remap in an lpt makes a huge difference mate and they became faster than a stock t5 mate .

I wondered it if would pick up a bit quicker then a T5 at lower speeds which is probably of more use in day to day running.

I'm sure everyone has opinions, some good some bad, I use HLM in bromsgrove for all my work and have never had any trouble. I've tried shark and they fobbed me off on the phone. But again that's just my opinion. Whatever you decide you will love the benifit a of the extra boost.

Big increase in mid range torque - it's night and day

IIR 0-60 went from down from 7.5 to 6.6 seconds (I did have the graphs from an ELM327 but cannot find them ATM)

Had a couple of quotes now but all at £400 or over! That's about 15% of what the car is worth so my not be happening after all sadly.

As Graeme says you get what you pay for, when you work out £ per bhp it's not that bad, well worth it imo.

AET did advise me not to take the power up that high but it was my decision & only my decision to push for more power ..
I was half expecting my liners to go way before I reached this amount of power to be honest ..

engine now rebuilt & will be pushing for more power
