    Smoking

My cars had a smoking habbit since the day that I got it however I never thought it was that bad...until today. Got caught in some horrendous traffic jams this morning, took over an hour to do less than a mile and then another two hours to do a journey that normaly takes around 15-20 mins tops. Whilst ticking over for so long every time I pulled forward there was a fairly bad puff of what looked to be blue smoke, and when just idling you could see it wafting away from the back of the car. Under normal conditions it doesnt smoke that bad, I get the odd puff every now and again, this morning though it was that bad it was making my daughter feel ill. I know a previous owner has allegedly refurbed the turbo but other than a few vague posts on here I have no proof of that (Though it does pull like a frikkin train), is it likely to be the seals on the turbo and not something more ominous?.. (valve stem seals....RINGS....) I've seen refurb kits on Ebay for about £50, accoring to their chart I need to get a Superback kit for my 18T, is this right?

PCV's been done already, no smoke from the dipstick at all. I asked at a local indy and he said he's never had to change any stem seals, it's always the turbo. Is it possible to get the stem seals replaced without taking the head off?..I know there's a way of doing it, just wondering if anyones managed to do it?

My mate tried doing his on his 850R without taking the head off and he said it was that much of a nightmare he ended up pulling the head back off. Not saying its not possible though because I have read of people doing it.

I have a nice refurbed 18t sitting here too that im looking to sell. I bought it of James t5r never got round to fitting it before I got rid of my V70R.

I know I'll regret asking but how much?... And can someone give me an idea how much to redo the head?

Mine did the same as this, I had worn bores, to the tune of 30thou in the middle of them, no wonder my piston ring weren't doing much!

Cheers, I think the first course of action then is a compression check. If the engine is worn I'll probably just buy a lower mileage one and swap it over rather than start messing about rebuilding stuff.

Mine was still giving 245bhp on the rollers, right before it was stripped, never did a compression check though.

I'm looking for £200 plus delivery. That's what I paid for it off James and not looking to make anything off it. As said I was going to fit it to my car as turbo was shot but I threw the towel in on my car before I did anything about it.

It seems a good turbo mate only reason it never went on the car was the list of jobs needing done on it were mounting up so got rid. I sold the exhaust on to dob off here.

Just out of interest, if it is the rings.. Has anyone tried any of these engine treatments? Like the Wynn's 'worn engine treatment', claims to cut down on smoking and help with compression. I dont want to use this as a way of fixing the engine because obviously if it's smoking that much because it's worn then it needs replacing... but if it will help cut the smoking down until I can afford it and have the time to swap the engine out.

I might but it kinda depends on what a compression check finds.. Can I let you know after the weekend?.. If the compression's ok then I'll probably have it off you, if it's not then I'll have to try and scrape up the money for a replacement engine.
