Rattle in front while on bumpy roads, look at this?

    Hi All,

Been trying to locate a nasty metallic rattle in my 2002 S60 manual. The car has done about 140K miles and when I bought it I thought the rattle would be linked to old suspension parts. Having sorted the old suspension (new shocks, links, arms etc..) the nasty rattle is still there. I can't find anything in the suspension that would cause a nasty rattle, except maybe old drive shafts?
But have a look at this and see if yours does the same? Could it be the source of my noise?

    Thanks,

    Marc

    How did I miss this?

Mine does this too (the gear linkage thing - it's normal), I doubt this is the cause of the noise. Have you checked the hub bolts? they can cause a knpck/rattle when changing gear and coming on and off the throttle. The subframe bushes can also make a bit of noise when worn but I doubt that's the problem. There's lots of things that can mislead you to think there's a problem - seatbelt buckle rattling on the trim, bottle rattling off the seat runner (underneath) etc.

Possibly a loose heatshield on the exhaust?
    Track rod ends?
    wishbone bushes?
could even be something daft like the rad fan has worked loose.

Tie rod ends are my next check, and the left side drive shaft. Mine moans and rattles when the left front wheel goes through a dip in the road.... or rattles when driving on cobble stones.... very annoying and at times embarrassing :-)
I can't cause the suspension to make any noise at standstill and pushing the car down or up... nor do I feel any play in the wheels when o the ground... I got the new hub bolts for the xc90 with the rubber stops, no difference.. When redoing the shocks and arms and links I hope I did not somehow mess up the drive shaft.... or mount something wrongly... but at the moment I have no time nor space to take the suspension on that side apart again and check everything....sigh...
The quest for the noise continues....

It's very easy to damage the inner CV when doing the arms and shocks on these cars, I would suspect that's what you may have done

Just garb them and give them a wiggle, you should be able to tell if they're shot. Not expensive to replace but a pain in the arse to do.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was subframe bushes, these cars are getting on a bit now, so there's bound to be a bit of movement.

Wouldn't have mattered, I'd have got Rachel to unwrap it as payback for her wrapping.

That's the ones Bud, they go where the subframe bolts to the floorpan, and front cross member, I don't know how hard the old ones are to get out, but the new ones should wind in when you tighten the bolt.
