    C70 steering wheel change?

    hi,
the steering wheel on my C70 is really grim. really sticky and looks like its melting!
i have given it a wash and scrub and its better but not great.
has anyone changed their steering wheel and if so how does the air bag mess things up. do i have to get volvo to reset the air bag system? or can i just disconnect battery, wait 30 mins or so. change wheel then reconnect battery?
any help would be great. otherwise im just going to scrub the nuts off it trying to clean it.

    cheers , nick

Just disconnect the battery, and wait 30 mins or so, and you're good to go.

Our C70 has the exact same problem, just keep an eye on Ebay as i managed to pick up a mint steering wheel and it even has the sporty thumb grips on it which ours didn't have. I also got the leather gear knob from the same car aswell, all in i think i paid £70'ish ...

There is photo's on the net of how to do the swap, as Wobbly says you will need a long torx bit and it will also need to be very thin as the recess hole at the rear of the steering wheel is not very wide in diameter, and the angle you have to try and get is a pain aswell. The best way is to remove the ignition cowling which will give you more access and make the job easier.
Also, when you disconnect the battery you will not be able to turn the steering wheel 180 degress to get access to the torx screw in the rear of the wheel, so maybe jack the front wheels off the ground to make turning less strainfull, it also helps when putting the new wheel on to get it central, putting a steering wheel on at half lock and getting it bang on may be hit and miss. You could undo the air bag torx screw, turn the wheel back to its central postion then disconnect the battery.
Once the wheel is off be wary as there is a turning dial thingy that needs to stay in it postion, its on the column.

I just recently swapped over the steering wheel and airbag on my Megane R26 to a Clio 200 item which is far nicer, intially you do worry that the air bag might go off but it wont, just take your time and you'll be fine.

I'd recommend undoing the bolts and then disconnecting the battery, then removing the airbag. Use some tape to stop it falling out.

I've sold loads of steering wheels on fleabay and it's a weird buyers market tbh. I've sold one at £40 and another one exactly the same, in the same condition for £190. It's all down to timing I suppose.
