New alternator now supplied by Gav (Merc85) and needing fitting - really helpful and good value too. The battery had a dead cell, incredibly I still had the receipt for it (three and a half years in) and Halfords swapped it - good, because it was a Bosch expensive one. The alternator I think had been going mad trying to charge the failing battery and had overheated to the extent that the insulation on the windings had shorted in places, because whilst the old unit still charged...it did it at nearly 16 volts! So now I just have to rip the old one out...ha ha. Anyone fancy giving me a hand? Or failing that, point me to any good threads or videos on the topic? ;-P
