    Very persistant abs fault

I need help! My 2004 S60 D5 has been a paragon of pleasure being largely fault free over the years, so I suppose something was bound to blot its copy book.
The ABS light came on with the messages 'Anti-skid temporarily off' and 'Brake assist disabled'. Now my local garage owner is a very easy going chap and although not a Volvo specialist, he does have diagnostics for the S60. If I gave him twenty quid, he would read the codes, tell me what they were and said I could come back to read/delete the codes as often as I needed to, to find the fault, at no further charge.

The code 0124 showed a fault at the N/S rear wheel, so as the wheel bearing was rather noisy after 111,000 miles I replaced it with a new one. No joy with the ABS light, so I replaced the sensor - still no joy. I then changed the rear wheel bearings round - left to right - and fitted another sensor. The diagnostics were still showing a fault on the rear N/S. I disconnected the sensor at the plug under the seat to make sure there was no wiring fault - the diagnostics came back with 'No signal from sensor', so that seemed to rule out a wiring fault.

I am now stuck!! Please, can anybody help?

Check your abs ring is not cracked on this wheel.

If I remember right you're better off replacing the cv joint than trying to just replace the ring

Am I correct in thinking that s 60 is not rear wheel drive . If so it does not have c v joints on rear wheels unless I am completely barking up the wrong tree . The symptoms you have sound very like the ones I had with V 70 I am assuming that rear wheels have reluctor rings like front on v70 . If so I can see no reason to changeable c.v. As reluctor rings are easily removed and replaced and much cheaper than c.v joints
If I have got the drive train on s 60 completely wrong please forgive my ignorance.

Actually not sure now if s 60 has reluctor ring on rear hub it might be one of those ones that senses the balls running round in the bearing race in which case previous advice was worthless as you have already checked by swapping bearings round.

No ABS rings on the rear I'm afraid. The equivalent seems to be incorporated in the grease seal for the bearing assembly and the only way is to replace the whole bearing assembly, which I have done, to no avail. So back to the drawing board...HELP!

Saw another threadl where guy had changed rear bearing but had not removed the rear oil seal which was stuck on the stub axle and looked like it was part of hub
This meant abs sensor was trying to read through two oil seals , might be worth checking yours
Let us know how it pans out good luck

Strange you should mention it. On the back of the wheel bearing covering the oil seal is a thin tin plate. When I removed the old bearing, this plate stuck on the suspension arm and I didn't notice it, so when I fitted the new bearing, there were two tin plates, which then set the ABS warning to come on. When I realized what I had done, I took the bearing off and removed the old plate. When I re-assembled it, the ABS light went off for a couple of days, only to then come back on ...Arrrh!

EUREKA!! I've fixed it all by myself. For anyone who might have the same problem, on the back of the wheel bearing assembly there is a tin plate which covers the oil seal. When assembled onto the suspension, the ABS sensor just rests against it and must sense the bearing going round. Now, I compared the original plate and the new one that came on the bearing and they looked identical. However, I swapped the plates around so the original one was back on the car, drove down the drive, and -EUREKA!- all the faults cleared themselves. I have now cancelled my order for anti-depressants and ordered some Viagra instead!!

My bad, got it into my head that it was for front somehow.
I'm sure i've read somewhere that the rings have to be heated onto the CV joint which can be a trcky job in itself

Good to see you've got it fixed. Not taken the rear axle to bits on either of the Volvo's I've had, any pics of the difference?

As long as you clean the corrosion and crap off the cv joint body properly they are designed to be an interference fit and will go on to the cv quit happily without heating I have never heated one up and would be slightly worried that doing so would distort or weaken the ring.
