    AWD setup

Ok, just a couple of questions, I'm going to be converting my car to AWD, but there are a couple of questions I have, 1, when the angle gear fails on the awd, a lot of people run as 2wd, so my question is, if the prop shaft is disconnected how does the power just go to the front wheels, which leads me to question 2, if I take out the front shafts would the car work as rwd?

The angle gear works off the takeoff for the o/s driveshaft, so if you removed both front driveshafts it wouldn't go anywhere, as the front diff would try and send power to the front n/s driveshaft.

The rear wheels get they drive from the angle gear which gets it`s drive from the CROWN wheel in the diff.

If the front dive shafts are removed in theory the rear wheels should be driven.

You will need to remove the rear diffs electronic clutch.

Hussain on Volvospeed is getting 500whp through his setup, so as long as it's put together right and all the upgrades/mods are done to the diff, all should be fine.

To add to Stribo and Oblark's explanation, here is a pic of the crown/diff with the angle gear output shaft (note knackered splines as mine was the first gen before they started glueing(sp?) the sleeve to the gearbox)

It connects with a sleeve which is usually the first thing to go (designed that way as its cheaper) Here is my old sleeve next to the new sleeve (note more knackered splines LOL)

Another note to add is that the later angle gears have a different ratio (not sure which year they changed) so they have to match them to the rear diff

I remember someone did an AWD conversion to a Gul T5R saloon on another forum (can't find the link as yet) and they had to fabricate the suspension mountings and lots of other stuff.

Oh and you can also get a quaife LSD for the AWD (though its the M66 S60R box it is for)

I don't know what AWD system you are going to try and install, but I think mine only puts drive to the rear wheels (about 40%) when the fronts start to lose grip. If a front wheel goes out of sync with any other wheel by a little as 1/6th of a revolution the AWD operates an electric pump to close the haldex plates thus putting drive to the rears. I have had my car on a TWD Dyno with the fuse removed putting all the power to the fronts. When the AWD fails it strips the splines that drive the rear prop shaft. The cost of replacing the a gle gear is close to £2000. I wouldn't think that removing the front shafts would put all the power to the rear wheels as the system can't recognise out of sync front wheels. It's a very complicated system and I wish you all the best trying to retro fit one.

Don't think it would be too hard to fit the viscous coupling and lock it up or fabricate a straight through prop.
