    Mate, I'm not sure what is going on with your son (dont want to say something out of place!) but your right, he is priority and if the car is working when driving normally I would not touch the car until everything is in a better place, sods law it'll break when you try to fix it! on the flip side having a little girl with CF I'm in and out of hospital a fair bit and there is nothing like a car to mess with to take my mind of the worries and stress of it all! fortunately I am in a position of having a daily driver but I hope you don't give up as she is a beauty!
