    Separated handbrake linings? wheel bearing?

    Hello All,

I noticed a loudish bang when driving off my (sloped) drive a few months ago, got out, thinking I had hit something, but everything was ok. I don't use the car very much, it often sits on the drive for two weeks.

I drove it 400 plus miles this weekend, almost all on motorways, and have been aware of a rhythmic humming noise between 40 and 70 (it is most noticeable at 70ish but disappears after that, possibly due to road noise) - it's the kind of noise that a wheel bearing makes when it's on it's way out, but being aware of the crap handbrake shoe linings issue, I wondered if it would be that, plus the car (a 2006 S60R) has only done 52K and so I would be very surprised if the wheel bearings were on their way out (although it is possible of course).

Before I give it to Volvo, is there a relatively easy way to diagnose either of these problems, and are they fixable by a DIY mechanic?

    Thanks in advance as always,
    Nick0

Mine bangs now and again when I'm pulling away after the cars been sat around for a week. The handbrake shoes can sometimes bind to the hub. When i last had my rear brakes changed when the hub was removed the handbrake linings just fell apart. There's a chance that one of the shoe linings has come away. It has been known that they can break up and do some serious damage. The shoes are pretty easy to change but I think rear bearings need to be pressed in so probably better off done by a mechanic unless you have a press. As for the noise itself it could be either to be fair. Hope you manage to find the issue and its a cheap fix.

Hand brake linings seem to be quite common. I inspect mine every time I change the brakes, which if you drive like me is about once a year.

As Steve said, it could be either, and both are relatively common problems on.the S60R. Easiest thing to do would be to take the rear discs off, and have a look at the linings.

Thanks everyone. How do you take the discs off? Is it fairly easy?

Put in gear, and take hand take off, remove rear wheel, remove caliper, then there's a 10mm peg holding the discs to the hub, remove that, and it should pull off. If the linings have come adrift then they may jam between the inside of the disc and their mounting plate, in which case try rotating the disc as you pull it off.

Normally if you grab the wheel at each side and try to 'wiggle' it you will feel a slight clink, however when the front bearing went on my C70, there was no free play.

I didnt get any noises BTW, just the odd BANG! If your leaving your car on a flat drive for more than a week, just leave it in gear with the handbrake off! I never use mine at Airports etc etc

Your noise might be a tire, swap your wheels front to back and see what happens
    Thankyou, Goodnight....much love

I had wondered if it might be the tyres, I put a new set of four Vreds on in October, the fronts have half worn and the rears are like new!

Sadly the cheap/easy swapping the front and rear tyres did not solve the problem.
I did notice that the offside front was extremely heavily worn on the inside - could badly misaligned tracking be the culprit?

Tracking is probably out then however, if you're a bit "enthusiastic" on roundabouts, that could cause uneven wear.

Have you had the AWD serviced at all? having good tread on the back and half worn on the front, coupled with a funny noise at certain speeds could be an indication of angle gear problems or failure.

I think tracking is definitely out, both fronts were heavily worn but the offside was almost bald on the inside - the tyres were new in October/4000 miles ago!

I asked the main dealer that serviced it in October to check the AWD system - there is nothing to service on it as far as I am aware - it's sealed units - the only thing to check is the seal on the angle drive (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!).

I am hoping that the AWD system is ok, and the dreaded angle gear doesn't need replacing...my car is a MY2006 and so has the later splined sleeve that fails in earlier cars.

I am going to check the handbrake linings tonight: Although the handbrake is working properly, I expect to find that the linings are shot (cos I've had the telltale bang), however I don't understand why they would cause this kind of noise.

I spoke to a knowledgeable sounding service manager at Squire Furneaux Volvo who drives a S60 and he said he could not remember a car needing a wheel bearing doing so that sounds like a rartity. I'm hoping that replacing the handbrake shoes will do the trick cos I could do without a S60 size service bill this month!

Get the car "all wheel tracked" Costs about £60 but worth it, especially on the 4WD i would of thought

youll probobly find the buses in your lower arms are worn. the rear bush is prone to splitting. is this is worn then 4 wheel alignment is pointless. i awd i would of thought all tyres should weear evenly

Thanks chaps. I have just this minute finished replacing the handbrake linings - the nearside had completely come away but was still in place. Unfortunately it has not cured the problem so I've called Volvo Assistance to see if they can tell me what it is.

Had the noise diagnosed as the poxy tyres, two Vreds, brand new in October (2000-3000 miles ago max), now write offs. Arse. Oh well at least it's not anything on the 4wd system. The tech pointed out that one of my CV boots was split - am waiting for a price to replace.
Thanks for all your comments guys.
