Well cracked the 10v gearbox open this evening and was pleasantly surprise by the limit of the damage, but will have to replace one part I hadn't bargained on, one half of the case.....Damn

For those who've not taken one a part before, it is relatively easy, the selector roll pin needs knocking out and the selector removed, then lay the box on the bell housing flange and remove all the casing bolts and carefully prise the case apart, rotate the big gear selector as you gently lift the casing of and it should come away easily.

    And the damage

So I will be having to replace a few cogs and half of the case, that will teach me....don't forget when you've drained your new gearbox of oil, as this will happen in approximately 30 miles if you even get that far

Well a bit more progress made this evening, not too sure on a couple of the bearings on the layshaft and reverse/fifth hub. The gears on the top of the input and layshaft both are a bit hammered, but that is only to be expected as they appear to have been trying to convert the layshaft bearing rollers into milled swarf, of which a large proportion was caught on the magnetic disc in the bottom of the gearbox.

I have a spare m56 box with standard ratio's, Pedro has kindly offered some internals from a 10v box, so it is just a case of moving them here and finding a spare case, as I don't really wish to have to strip the spare box if I don't have to. A swap of the crown wheel and pinion swap isn't as straight forward as you'd think on these boxes, as you need to swap 2 pinions (1 on the layshaft cluster and the second on the reverse/fifth gear shaft) so a bit more stripping and swopping would be required, but then I would lose the lower 1st and 2nd gears if I swopped the final drive into the m56 I have here

lol.....sorry no prizes, but I am amazed how simple and easy to dis-assemble the box is, in comparison to the rovers and mini gearboxes I used to mess around with years ago
