    T5 to D5 Power

    Hi All,

Sorry for the long post that will ensue, but I'm in a bit of a quandry.

I'm giving some very serious thought to changing my car for something newer, if I do this, I'm able to take advantage of a scheme at my (part time) employment which would pay for part of the price difference between my 850 and the newer car. I would also like something a little newer if I'm honest.

This is where I'm now going round in circles. I'm a car enthusiast, and therefore I love the T5. I love the power and flexibility - I'd go as far as to say the S60R is my ideal car - unfortunately even the lowest price S60R's are £20k, and whilst I could stretch to this at a push, the running costs, such as insurance, would start getting annoying after the initial "rush" of owning the car subdued. I'd also lose a heck of a lot in depreciation! The standard S60 T5's are certainly within reach, and insurance prices aren't too high (I'm 21) so if I went petrol, I'd be looking for a very well specced standard T5 and with my addition of a remap to boost the power nearer to that of the R (but without the AWD )

However, I have taken notice of comments from D5 drivers regarding the performance of the D5, especially once RICA'd. Some people have even dared to suggest that the D5 is as fast as the T5 - something which has certainly made me sit up and take interest in the diesels. I have to admit, the most powerful diesel (car) I have driven is a 136bhp Peugeot 407, but even that felt fast - I can only imagine what a 204bhp RICA'd D5 feels like! That must be phoenomenal! Coupled with diesel fuel economy and that sounds like a very good overall package.

I also do a lot of miles in Europe each year, mostly motorway cruising - this is another major factor in considering the diesels.

One thing I do dislike about (all) diesels is the tractor noise at idle and low speeds.

    So, specific question time.

    1. Can anyone give me a base comparison between the D5 and T5. I find it hard to get test drives due to my young age

    2. What fuel economy could I reasonably expect out of a D5? My driving style tends to be 'sedate' cruising but I like to use the acceleration occasionally!

    3. How well insulated is the cabin from external noise? Specifically the engine noise in a diesel?

Any other comments regarding the T5/D5 S60's also appreciated, anything to look out for on either? Is servicing similar to the 850's etc? Likewise, if anyone has gone from a T5 to a D5 I would be very keen to hear your thoughts!

    1. Specs -

    850 T5:

    0-60 = 7.2 secs, top speed 149 mph
    1/4 mile = about 15.0 s

    D5 RICA:

    0-60 = 7.2 secs, top speed 140 mph
    1/4 mile = about 15.7 s

    2. Fuel economy D5:

    Hard driving: 36-40 mpg
    Normal driving: 40-50 mpg
    Very careful crusing: 65 mpg

    3. Cabin well insulated, and pretty quiet.

    Servicing cheaper than T5.

    Adam.

Are those figures for a standard T5 and a standard D5??????

I went out in the standard XC90 D5 185 yesterday loads of torque over 400nm, lovely burble too, not bad for a 2.2 ton car.

and that torque will be top of the peak, which only last for a very short period, it will not hold that level of torque from say 2000 - 5000rpm, which a petrol turbo volvo would hold it there

OK, I have said in the past that a tuned D5 is a suitable alternative to a stock T5, including performance. If the D5 is tuned, it will have more torque than the stock T5 up to 4500 rpm, which is also available from around 1700 rpm.
