Is there a way to tell if an early s60 has had the DIM replaced? Something to do with the speedo?

humm dunno MRP is the one to ask, but i really like the s60 lpt im driving atm
If its got chrome rings around the speedo & rev counter it's been changed.

If the speedo and rev counter have chrome rings around them, it's the later DIM.
EDIT As Harvey's just said.
if the speedo has chrome rings around them its been replaced
I'll just repeat that, chrome rings, that's what you want

Chrome rings, but you are DIM too
The early ones DON'T have chrome rings.
The Terminator had the later DIM....chrome around his ring

Let me see if i have this right then.....if its got chrome rings, then they've been changed?? lol
What year did they change anyway?

It was around 2003 I believe.
The chrome ring theory won't tell you if the original one had been repaired though!
It's a bit of agro, but doesn't cost much nowadays if they do need fixing.

If an S60 I was looking at had the DIM done, i'd see that as a bonus, but wouldn't have it on my 'must do' list of things to look for in a potential car!

I don't really see the point of the 2.0t or the 2.4t.
They're not gonna be any cheaper to insure. And they're not any more economical than a T5. T5 or D5 are the only engines worth considering IMHO.

My thinking is that i'm not going to be able to find a decent d5 or t5 for 1500, but will be able to get a decent 2.0 or 2.4. Remember, i have to get an auto, so i'm a bit weary of getting an early t5 geartronic.

Plenty of the earlier D5's are straight auto, and not gaytronic. I don't believe they have any problems.
What about an S80? I know they're not as good looking, but they're not all that dissimilar, and you get a lot more for your money it seems.

Shame it has to be auto, as I know of a really good S60 D5, that would be under £1500, and just had loads of work done by a Volvo independent.
