Just wondering what is the difference between the 2,any difference in strength of the internals etc.I have a good lump with a good mileage so was kind of thinking if it can come in handy. Will it handle the same boost as 2.3 one using 16-18t?

Volvo experimented with using a 2.5 for the original 850 T-5, but had issues with the thin cylinder walls (S60R style) which is why they went for the 2.3

And yet they still used it for the P2 R
and it aint a 2.5 its a 2.4
the 2.5T has a slightly higher compression ratio and as stated if pushed to the limit will crack a liner, easily sorted via Tim Williams with his shim kit. Nosh got over 400bhp out of his before he split a liner.
As for mine its getting pushed to breaking point in the next couple of months too see exactly what it can handle but been advised with correct hardware and mapping it should see in excess of 300 whp approx 340bhp

ive heard of many standard ones splitting to. ive never heard of the 2.4 splitting a linner. thing about the R is the two things that were supposed to make it better made it worse. 2.5 engine been weaker and the 4 wd being a soft. if ford hadnt of got involved the R would of been up there with scoobies and evos

If Ford hadn't have got involved in Volvo, they'd have gone the same way as Saab.
We have neither split liners, nor a broken AWD, therefore we have a great drivers car.
gm were to blame for saab.

i mean in general. im not saying its not a great car. i love the R but with a bit more though it could of been bullet proof. engine is easily sorted get a 2.4 t5 lump. 4wd is a different matter. you wouldnt launch a R like you would a scooby. custom made gears from exotic materials is only answer to make it stronger

TBF, the AWD system was a Volvo choice, as it was already being used in the XC90, if Ford had a hand in it, they'd have used a FF Developments viscous coupling system, as they did in the Jag X-type.
haha i knew it would be volvos fault. good job they didnt get involved. we wouldnt want 3 versions of a mondeo on the road.
