    Lightbulb Rear axles.

I wonder if anyone knows if the awd rear set up is interchangeable with a normal 2wd rear beam?
Seeing as my car is no longer awd I'd like to convert it for 2 reasons, 1 less drag & theoretically better mpg & 2 I can lower the old girl. I've googled it a few times & I can't see if anyone has asked the question or carried it out.
Read many times about the expensive springs to go with my nivomats & the coil over option ($900 just for rears) just aren't entertaining me in my future plans. Sorry for my random questions. Lol
    Cheers.

they can be swopped because someone has done it the other way round & converted his 854 to AWD, however it really isn't an easy job. Even the fuel tank is different on the AWD to the FWD version

Interesting, that's the first I've heard of it. Cheers pedro!
I figured I'd end up getting a breaker v70t5 for parts to do it as mine is very different underneath. I never thought about the tank but it makes sense. Would be a lot of work but at least I could stick on a set of coil overs or at the least a set of springs.
I said I wouldn't lower it but I keep seeing dropped r's & mine needs to be done.

The rear axle from a standard v70 will not fit on a awd v70.

Just remove the rear diff, prop shaft and the rear drive shafts.
But you will have to refit the ends of the drive shafts as the abs rings are fitted to the ends.
I have done this to a v70r awd

As far as I remember, it was far from a straight forward conversion, he had to fabricate a complete custom rear subframe.

That's what I was trying to point out, but as its already been done once shows it is possible

Cheers mate, I may well do that when I pluck up the courage to go to a main dealer.
I've been told on another forum (sorry vpcuk) that it won't fit & looking under it this afternoon I'm inclined to think the same without chopping & fabricating a lot. Think in all honesty I'll keep it as it is. The member from the other forum reckons it won't be giving me much drag & I do always have the option to go awd again if in a few years I decide to spend a small fortune. Even if I sourced a prop out of the few different combinations available there is still no cert the rest of the system is ok. It's whine free & all that's missing is the prop & it's mount. £££££ mega bucks though I reckon.
I really liked the idea of the 6 speed box though, I guess a 6speed manual from a ph2 s60r or v70r would be pretty rare wouldn't it?
I'm thinking lower the front & leave it raked up on the rear.

He whats to convert a awd to fwd which can only be done by just removing the rear drive train.

I was on about doing the opposite way around. For the effort I won't get any gains bar the ride height. The awd suspension is a better system I guess.

The AWD rear suspension is modified from a 700/900 (can't remember which) so an older system than the 850's delta-link rearend

In all fairness the old girl doesn't handle bad at all, most manufacturers stick with the tried & tested though don't they?
I've seen some drop mounts that effectively lower the car by shortening the mount. I'd still have full use of my nivomats & the desired ride height achieved..
I just don't want it to bounce me about or be noisey which I've read the adjustable spring & koni yellow combo are. I've also read the rebound going over speed bumps isn't the best either. I wouldn't want to ruin the ride comfort with anything like that.
