    Exhaust back box

Got a little blow on the top of the back box about the size of a 50 pence piece. Could easily jollop it up or get a plate welded on, but the annoying thing is that it actually sounds good at idle and when you give it the beans.
Which leads me to thinking about a performance replacement.
I know some of you have these so am after a bit of advice really.

Car is 2005 2.4 V70 T5 and I am after subtlety not like a boy racer. Menacing at idle and a nice growl under load but I have to carry the wife, so must be fairly quiet at gentle driving.

    Any suggestions???

    Cheers
    Paul

My issue is not so much the missus taking the car off me, but taking little M-R-P out and about. I'd rather he was in the safest car in it's class than in a 6 foot sardine tin that crumples like a paper cup in an impact.

    Back on topic...

I'd also like to have a nice burble from the backbox. Since you say you've got a hole in the box and it sounds nice, why not just put some Krust on it and enjoy the soundtrack

There's some nice cheap backboxes on fleabay with 3" outwardly rolled tips but there's gonna be some plumbing involved as the pipe leading to the backbox is at 45 degrees. Then there's the risk of that horrible "Jap" drone on the motorway. I like to hear the stereo.

The drone can be left behind if you drive fast enough!...
Just go to powerflo or the like and tell them what you want!

I'm really happy with my jetex, it doesn't sound standard, growls like a mofo on full chat & is drone free. I know mines a ph1 but I'd think seeing as jetex's slogan used to be "the silent performer" a ph2 system would be as refined.
I was in exactly the same boat as you, my mrs went in my v70r for the first time last week since I bought it in January, all due to the noise.

    I'm in the same boat.

It was always on my agenda to get a better sounding exhaust, after all, the sound of a 20 valve turbo is one of the main benefits of owning a T5 . And now I've just found my back box is leaking in two places, it's going to have to be bodged for the MOT and then replaced once I'm back on the road.

I'll be going for a custom made one. Where, I don't know. I know what I DON'T want, and that's an obviously aftermarket looking, big shiny thing sticking out under the valance with a stupid pipe on it. I want the box to be as hidden as possible (like the original) and I either want a discreet pipe, or a slash cut twin outlet like the V70R. As mine is a proper grandad mobile in a nice shade of "metallic urine" (Champagne) I might even see if I can get a down turned tailpipe Keep it proper stealth looking.

    Uh-oh.....
The vw lads run diesel type tailpipes cut short when they flush the exhaust recess off, I've always liked the idea of a stealth system.
A decent custom place could knock up any design, reason I went for my jetex was the fact it was quiet & the local custom exhaust bloke is a complete nob.

Like most of you on this topic, im really interested in changing the 'zorst (max power spelling ftw!) too!! theres a 'zorst fabricator 10 mins from me and he usualy does turbo back systems for about 280 - 320 ish which is good value and his work is spot on!

The only thing stopping me is the noise a gaytronic makes when you put a 'zorst on it... might be me, but it doesnt sound right! But being custom made, he could always tone it down if needed.

He did a full system for me on my previous manual p1 T5 and it sounded amazing! I then sold the car to my father who couldnt stand the noise so the cat and a middle box was fitted back on to her, she now purrrsss like a kitty!

As i'm sure you know, P2's are very good at deadening engine and road noise anyway.....it may be too much for you but I cut my backbox off and finished it in polished 2.5" stainless. It is loud from outside or with all the windows down, but at motorway speeds I can cruise and the mrs can comfortably sleep.
