    Cool S70 cd 1997

OK here we go, my 1997 S70 CD auto in black stone, named the Black Shark after the Kamov KA-50 helicopters of the same name. Maybe this thread should be in the Projects section...if I manage to do anything interesting with it that is...

    Kamov KA-50:

Volvo S70 with 019 paint code:

Tee hee I have humorously mixed the photos up, don't know if anyone spotted that. I passed the factory where they make them in Arsenyev, Russia, and they reminded me of the S70 with high back end and sloping nose. Plus the colour of course.

Jobs to do prior to trying to make it any faster:

*Airbox is loose as one of the rubber mountings is broken.
*Front two tyres are awful, possibly losing air due to corroded rims - making the steering heavy.
*Puffs of steam/smoke from dipstick - clean/replace the PCV unit.
*Passenger side window is a little lazy to close.
*Drivers side switch bank in poor condition. Whoever owned it last must have used something on their hands that didn't agree with the rubber on the switches. She was a doctor and had the car since 2001! "How is your prostate sir?" [note to self: stop biting your nails]
*Brake discs may be very slightly warped as there is a bit of vibration with heavy use. They are very effective though so won't be rushing to do that one.
*Alloys are in poor condition as mentioned above.
*Rear bumper has a crack in it.
*All serviced including new cam belt but auto fluid needs changing.

It's very nice to drive - the suspension is softer than say a V70R I think but that makes it a bit more useable on our lovely smooth roads, with less fear of bouncing through a pothole and over a hedge. Plenty of grip without being rock hard. It has the B5234T3 engine without fly-by-wire throttle woo hoo so allows you some control over throttle opening. As opposed to the computer deciding that you really want almost ALL of the power long before your foot is to the floor.

As I do stuff I will post it up....not all of that rubbish above, just the stuff

    Cheers

    Nice motor

You forgot wheels - it needs something a bit nicer...

    Looking forward to the updates

I don't know I quite like them...I like to keep things as standard as possible, or at least not obvious. That's my excuse for keeping the budget down anyway

I have some 17" V70R Comet wheels with good tyres on them (Wintrac Vredstein), will think about it! Also in crappy condition.

First small job - fit an upper front strut brace:

Easy bolt-on job although restricts access to the pollen filter now. Never mind won't be going in there again for a while. Not sure if handling is improved as the tyres I have on may as well be made of sponge.

Just remembered another thing to fix! Expansion tank has small crack on overflow nozzle booo

The camera makes it look better...! The paint is marked in a fair few places where bird sh*t hasn't been cleaned off etc. But she scrubs up alright:

(The last time a bird shat on my car, I told her I would NEVER take her out again

    Boom boom

    I thank you)

These early first S/V70`s (mine is January `97) are quite good cheaper to run and very reliable 240bhp quick motors.

You may find it does not have the pollen filter as my V70 doesn`t, not even the frame around so that you can fit one.
The frame and filter you can get from Volvo if you so wish.

I prefer mine without it, as it`s near the airfilter the intake noise is louder, just `cos it`s not there the windscreen does not get wet inside at night either!

Yes, a bit strange isn't it. Old mans version of the rally style sticker to say which way is straight ahead? Or maybe just some Volvo bling

Yours is only the 2nd one I've seen in that colour.

Nice that, looks like a good project. I'd be tempted to paint the comets silver & stick them on. The perfos could be winter wheels then I guess. Like the name too. Do you work on aircraft as a job?

I will try them on fella see what they look like if I get chance. They are not so bad condition but all of them kerbed I think! Only one by me

No not my job but my Da was in the military so I have a bit of an interest. I was visiting Vladivostok and headed north to see some friends, the 'Black Shark' factory was on the way

There we go - on page 11 of the S70 brochure, Birch Wood Dashboard is a No Cost Option, and a steering wheel to match is Optional

oh yeah and pollen filter is mentioned on page 10
