Front wishbone rear bush fitting - easy!

Been wondering about this myself so I had a go tonight and was surprised by how easy it is...

First, clamp the wishbone in a vice (I'm sure you can do this on the car but I'm refurbing some wishbones so the vice was the way to go).

With a 9mm drill, drill through the rubber. You'll cut into the aluminium housing of the bush...

Use the drill to thin the housing some more, being careful not to damage the wishbone - you don't need to go right through, just thin it.

Then hammer a screwdriver between the bush housing and the wishbone...

This should be enough to loosen the bush and it will just hammer - out...

Use a big socket or a suitable bit of tube to isolate one side of the bush while pressing it in with a vice. You can clamp directly onto the other side of the bush as it'll compress enough to push the whole thing in...

    And... you're done!

Easy as! took 20 minutes to do both bushes

    Any questions - just ask.

Time to get busy with the spanners then mate. Have you tried it with the stock ecu yet? might be a knackered map.

Please don't take offence Martin, becasue I know you are clearly accomplished at working on your car, but,

I would definately not recommend to install pressed in bushes via the method described.

The bush should not have any pressure put on the centre peg at all during installation, and this is why volvo have a special tool the diameter of the bush outer sleeve that pressure is put onto.

I feel it will adversely affect the rubber properties if you press the centre into the bush this much, as it would not be expected to move this far during driving (nowhere near infact) and it would surely have the affect of overstretching the rubber.
At worst i could see it splitting the rubber, if not almost certainly affecting the bonding of the rubber and metal sleeve or the properties of the rubber - a bit like overstretching a rubber band.
so the bush will not be as stiff as it should have been , allowing excess movement even if it is not split.

I recommend a simple amendment to the procedure by putting a second socket the other side, to protect the centre peg and pushing only on the outer sleeve as the bush goes in would prevent premature failure.

    Jamie

Thanks for the input Jamie. However, the centre of the bush was only compressed by maybe 4 or 5 mm. One side of these bushes protrudes more than the other. I pressed the side with only a minor protrusion and in no way stressed it any where near it's normal operating movements so wouldn't have damaged it at all.
On the car, the middle of the bush is static and the outer bit is twisted by 20 or so degrees during normal driving, hitting potholes speed bumps etc.

Look at how it's twisted just by jacking the car up...

There's no chance of the bush being damaged using this method of insertion mate, if there was I'd use a 2nd socket like you said.

Well you made a fair point mate. It's something that would cross most people's minds when they go to fit these (I actually thought it would be a pig of a job) and a good way of explaining the job and it's possible pitfalls.

It all makes for better guidance in the end

Just to add a final note...

Unlike the front bushes, these cannot be fitted with the wishbone still on the car.
