How to fit Lowering springs P2 T5

    Hi everyone!

Ive just gone and bought some Lesjofors Lowering springs from PFV!

My question is there a how to guide on here to change the springs on a P2 V70 T5?? Ive had a quick look but couldn't find nout!

The front looks normal enough to changeover, the rear look a little more tricky?!

I thought about doing a how to but it was a PITA and I wasn't in the mood.

The front is as easy as it looks.

The back is a bit harder. you need to jack the back up quite high.
    Remove the wheels
    disconnect the lower tie bar
remove the shock (bolt at the bottom, nut at the top and pull it out the bottom)
With a 3-part spring compressor (the type with a claw at each end x 3) fed up the inside of the spring, compress it - a lot. the rear spring is big and the gap isn't lol.
pull the compressed spring out over the top of the hub.
    Refitting is opposite of removal.
When seating the rear spring, make sure the cut end of the spring is about 15mm from the stop in the seat to allow for movement when the spring settles or you risk the spring jumping out and believe me - it's a bitch to put back!

You can see the type of spring compressors I used in this pic...

Well smartypants, if you want to be picky, there's no 2 parts the same between the p1 and P2. They may look similar but all the P2 stuff is bigger. Even wheel bolts and hub carrier bolts.

Well if you want to get ultra picky, the parts may be different, but they all fit together in the same way.

We need a fool-proof how to on this!!

Yeah the front looks straightforward-ish. But the back freaks me out abit! Ive done coilover changes on a MX5 which couldnt be simpler!!

It's something I'll be having done in the very near future..... Planning on changing the wishbones for Meyle HDs, dampers and installing lowering springs - definitely a garage visit for me.

My advice is use a garage because having watched them being fitted it's a pig of a job - I watched 2 experienced mechanics struggle to get the rear springs on and it took a lot of force to fit them.

Definatley not a DIY job unless you have your own workshop, ramp and equipment.

I had a driveway and axle stands lol.

It's a bloody hard job. I'm quite a bit stronger than "average" and winding the spring compressors ruined me to a point where I had to get the brother in law to wind the comptessors for the front springs - I was that knackered.

Break your balls or pay 40 quid a corner. Choice is yours

I think this comment is invaluable

I bet this is one of those jobs that if I was looking at it in the Haynes manual, I'd think "that looks straight forward, I could do that". Knowing what a struggle it is, I'd definitely give this one a wide berth. I'm skinny and weak, so not one for me!

It took me 8 hours but I sheared a bolt which took nearly 2 hours to remove

Deffo not something to try in an afternoon mate. Especially if you've not done it before.

The haynes manual said there's no way of extracting the springs without a specific Volvo tool and didn't really go into much detail about removal.

The 850 was very easy, i did it quickly without special tools, just need spring clamps. Replaced all the top mounts too (upper and lower) The rears were even quicker, just jacked up the back end and took the wheels off, then compressed spring and pulled it out (after undoing one clamp bolt on bottom of spring). Is it really much harder on P2? I want to do my C70 soon, i had a look underneath my C70 the other week and it looks exactly the same to me. I sure i can do the whole thing in a few hours no trouble. Is V70 different?

The P2 S60/S80 and V70 are very different mate. Suspension components are bigger, springs are longer and stronger and the only way to get a compressor on them is to remove the shock (which runs up the inside of the spring) and feed the spring clamps up the inside of the spring. The spring is also seated about 5"into the boot floor. You need to pretty much half the length of the spring to get it out.

Well im glad to say i took the challenge and have successfully done the 4 springs!

Front was easy-peasy! the rears as everyone said were a little tricky! but i prevailed with the use of a bottle jack and the spring clamps!

Took the whole afternoon to do, but im glad i had a go and didnt have to resort to taking the car to a garage!

    Test drive tomorrow!!

    Hats off to you sir!

I'm really pleased you pulled it off. I didn't mean to scare you but I didn't want you to go at it without knowing how hard it could be. I bet you're gonna feel it tomorrow (today? what time is it... oh dear lol)

Please post some pics of your hard work as these cars look the nutz when they're lowered
