    clay and DA with compound

Now this is probably a daft question.....

If I am going to use the DA with Compound following through polish and wax should I use clay at any point?

if after you've washed the car the paint feels rough, ie not like glass then yes it needs claying. that roughness is microscopic bits if dirt ect... in the paint that washing doesn't get rid of.
clay after you have washed it, then wash it again before you compound.
follow with a good polish and finish with wax

The paintwork has swirls hence the need to correct with the compound.

Why clay before compounding? Surely the compound will cut through and remove the bits the clay will pick up.

I have the clay so it's no problem to do. I am just trying to get my head around the difference it will make.

because what will happen is it will pick up that dirt on the pad and create swirls,
you will be buffing that dirt into the paint.
you will notice you pad getting dirty and thats not what you want. You want that paint to be as clean as possable to make your life as easy as possable.

have a quick read of this, it no in depth guide but explains the basics

Clayed the car before using megs ultimate compound, polish and wax.

And yep you are right. The clay turned green from the crud that was stuck to the paint.

Clay bar but only use compound if it's absolutely necessary. As a rule of thumb I'd say use the least abrasive substance necessary to achieve a glossy finish, a strategy I always used when I used to valet and detail vehicles for a living.

I clay barred my T5 the other week and the difference was night and day. Did you use the Meguires Ultimate Wax? If not, get some because it's absolutely amazing stuff!
