Strange resonance / vibration S60 D5. *VIDEO INCLUDED!*

I've had this noise for some time now. Seems to have got worse, but not sure if that's just because its annoying me more and more!?

Something, somewhere is rattling / vibrating. It's not audible from outside, but from inside it *sounds* like its coming from behind the dashboard towards the top. It's certainly not the engine, that runs sweet as a nut, but this resonance is certainly provoked by engine speed. It's mainly at idle or low revs manoevering. Moving the steering wheel worsens it IMO only because the engine revs drop slightly.

Has anyone got ANY ideas? This is doing my head in!!!

Check your top mount and all the bolts related to the mount and cross brace.

I will check those as a process of elimination, thank you. I did fit a new top mount last year and inspected the brace mountings at the time. Might also be worth mentioning, you may remember advising me on the boot and bearing on the steering column where it passed through the bulkhead?? That is also all present and correct!

I am absolutely over the moon to say I've found and remedied the issue!!

The PSF return pipe was touching the conduit which carries the ECU loom through the bulkhead into the cabin. Seems that the pulses from the PS pump with the engine at idle cause a resonance through the pipe which was in turn transferred through the conduit.

A piece of foam zip tied between the two have cut the noise totally!

It's complete and utter bliss!!! This is probably a temporary fix until I find something a bit more 'proper' to put around the pipe but at least I know where this dastardly noise is coming from!

Glad you've found the source of the noise, and a cheaper fix you'll be pushed to find !

You have no idea how good it feels to get in, turn the key and just hear the gentle pur of the D5. I have been chasing this noise since July last year. It's been doing my brain in! But, you always look too far into things! I've looked at steering column, pump, rack, top mounts, rack ends etc. then turns out to be contact on a pipe!! DOH!!

Excellent work! 'Piorot-like' discoveries like that are awesome. A little sad maybe, but I'd be on cloud nine for days after a fix like that. Probably go for a nice long drive, just to hear the silence.
