    Arduino Based Boost Gauge

Currently I think I have a boost problem so was looking around for a boost gauge to plumb in but couldn't settle on one I liked. So my thought train moved onto making a small LED one using an LM3914 bargraph kit but the kit/chip is limited in its options. I had evolved the idea into something more complex with a vacuum and boost display.

I remembered I bought an Arduino board last year with the intention of using it for building a firing box but haven't yet got round to doing it. So after some more research I put some code together, bought an LCD and came up with this....

On startup it displays a welcome message

And has current and Peak boost figures

Currently it is in its very early development stage, I'm just waiting for a MAP sensor to arrive (hopefully tomorrow ) and I should be able to get some testing done. The LCD screen is a Green backlit one but there are various colours available.

So far cost wise the Arduino board was £25, LCD screen £8, MAP Sensor £12

I'm planning on adding a bargraph to it so it has a more visual representation.

Further development would see selectable displays like oil temp and EGT and a whole range of other things including full colour OLED screens (one could get carried away I suppose (LOL as if I said 'one')). I have seen one project where a guy used a Wii nunchuck as a menu controller so will be toying around with that idea too.

Obviously there is some device out there that will be able to do all this but I do like a good DIY project

Its also a lot simpler than putting together a LM3914 bargraph kit, literally just the MAP sensor plugged into the Arduino and the Arduino plugged into the LCD (perhaps one or two resistors/capacitors for smoothing/control), and if the code doesn't work right or you want to add something fancy, you just change it and upload it, takes milliseconds

I got the 20x4 display just in case I wanted to do more with it. The smaller display is 16x2

That's very impressive. Keep us up to date, that would look spot on in mine but I guess it would be suited to a fly by wire ph2?

This is very similar to one i've just got from www.zada-tech.com

My ones doing AFR, EGT, charge temp and intake temp and oil temp.
You can even set alarms on it so that if any of the measurements goes past a set point it can light up a warning light or sound a buzzer.

Yeah, I was looking at that too. You can also get the screen on its own (to use with the Arduino) but its around £50 so I binned that idea for now.

Will deffo be updating the thread with details

Its a standalone device, the MAP sensor just needs a line from the inlet manifold. So it would work on any turbo car.

It also gets it power from the usb cable so I'm going to hack an old 12V usb adaptor/charger I have rolling around in the footwell (think I need to clean the car :/ )

To make it more accurate I could also tap into the barometric sensor behind the headlight to give a local reference value of atmospheric pressure

Well, my MAP sensor hasn't arrived in the post today so I thought I would have a play with the startup sequence and start on the bargraph. The boost values are whatever the Arduino is reading as there isn't anything connected to the input yet.

I guess you'd need some kind of superbright display to get it to display brightly enough on the screen. Or a miniature projector, which you can get now AFAIK) and cut a hole in your dash

OK, so connect a Raspberry Pi to a mini projector, connect the Pi to a canbus adapter and plug into the car. There must be some linux based dashboard software available, then just a case of reversing the picture and adjusting the projection so that it displays as square on the screen
