    Engine codes

Got bored this morning so I decided to take my old engine apart.

I noticed on the block it had stamped "B5234T" is this a T5 engine ????

The bores are showing signs of wear but the bearing shells look OK

The number after the T indicates the additional stuff in the engine - crank type, manifold and compressor.
    The fact that it's a 2319 cc means its a T5.

    Found this,

The first five characters are as follows:

    1st: (B/D) B = Bensin (Petrol), D = Diesel
    2nd: (4/5/6) # of Cylinders
3rd & 4th: Approximate displacement in deciliters, may be rounded up or down. (23 ~= 2.3L)
    5th: (2/4) Valves per cylinder
    6th: (S/T) Standard[naturally aspirated] or Turbo
    7th: (2/3/4/5/6/7) Second-Seventh Generation

just because the evolution number many be different, doesn't mean the basic engine block has changed. As Martin pointed out, T-5R had a different evolution number even tho it only had a different ecu LINK

The B5234T stamped on the rear of the block tells you it is the basic engine the T5 225bhp.......but the code on the Timing cover B5234T3 240ps etc. etc. tells you what is inside the engine in way of components for to withstand more performance reliably.

The basic 850 T5 is not as strong as the later V70 T3 coded engine as the pistons are stronger and even the rod caps have a different size & thread for strength to accomodate the extra power to the Forged Crankshaft and the Forged Rods (NOT fully H forged rods).

As time went on the changes in `98 included different conical shaped valves and different oil filled tappetts along with different piston ring packages all to allow for easier starting and better performance.

If one can find it Vadis goes into depth about it all for these standard tune motors.
