ABS fault and fuel consumption

So just as i thought everything was getting on track with the pensioner mobile, today two demons have popped up.

First of all, this morning i had a flat tyre on the way to take my daughter to the doctors, had it replaced and now the ABS and Traction control lights on.
The ABS ecu has been repaired so doubt its that, could it be that the sensor has been damaged some how with the flat tyre? Ive red somewhere that different depth thread can cause problems but i thought that was on the AWD's?

Secondly, the car is drinking fuel like its going out of fashion more that normal. Driving off boost and like a church going grandad on a sunday, (no offence to the religous type) i get 50miles to £20 of V power, i understand fuel prices are going up but thats alot less MPG than usual. Could this be a MAF sensor? Car idles and drives fine other than that.

Is there anyway of testing the above? Have no fault codes at present.

You say you had the ABS Module repaired (see my "How To" thread on removal and refitting if you need to do it again and need help). When and where did the module get repaired?

It could be a speed sensor. My local stealers charged me nothing for a diagnostic but I was lucky. Most charge around £50 but my advice is get it done and that will save alot of hassle and will narrow the problem down for you. Don't be suprised to see fault codes for both rear wheel sensors on the diagnostic and ask them for a print out!

A local auto electrician did it for me with the correct guide. Would it be the weather if the unit wasnt sealed properly? Can the ecu be cleared by disconnecting the battery?

Will ring Volvo and see what they say, is it specialist diagnostic equitment thats needed then?

Some good points/tips James but that still wouldn't explain the low fuel consumption, 17mpg does seem very low for gentle driving.

I wouldnt want to drive on boost, surely the MPG would be single figure!

Yeah, you need DICE/VIDA because a fault code reader won't read the ABS/Tracs issue.

By the way, the new ABS Module from Volvo is about £1700 and the ABS is about £1100 so I'd avoid getting it from them at all costs. By the way, I have a spare ABS Module and pump from a 64,000 mile V70 2002, 2.4 petrol. I brought it from a trader on ebay but they saidd it would fit all petrol model but didn't fit my 2001 model. I've not tested it but it was statred on the listing as being in full working order.

I tried to arrange a return with the seller but they failed to communicate so I took it up wit hebay and they've refunded me for it. I'm going to be selling on so if you think you might want this then let me know and I'll arrange a photo for you so you can see if it's the correct one for your car.

Yes, however I was trying to help with the ABS light issue on that ocassion.

Something i did forget to mention, the light went off whilst driving earlier, and once stopped and started again came back on.

I've got much better than that, seems since my boost problem has been sorted, driving off boost i get worse MPG haha

If the abs/tracs light is intermittent then it sounds like the abs module needs repairing again, had the same problem on my v70, i bought an abs module and pump for £45 from ebay, replaced it and it stopped the lights coming on, the fault code reader kept saying it was more than one sensor, normally a hint its the module gone.

Before the pedal used to go soft and i had to pump a few times to get hard again (no sexual inuendo's needed haha) Thats not the case this time, could it still be the module?

I had my module repaired and my lights are still on which makes me wonder whether I've been diddled!

I was lucky enough to find one that hadn't been repaired, so at least if it was faulty I stood more of a chance! The pedal went soft on mine when the lights were on and I used to do the same with the brake pedal to get the brakes to work better/properly!

Fuel consumption issue could be a faulty Lambda sensor, often won't throw a MIL and if it's failed and the cars running rich you probably won't feel it either, if you have a friendly MOT testing station nearby ask them to do an emissions test for you (at constant 3000 rpm as well as idle) and it should show if there is any fueling issues at constant RPM's. ABS system will self check each time the ignition is cycled which can explain why the light keeps going on and off if the fault is intermittent. I repaired my module a few years ago then a few weeks later the O/S/R abs sensor failed (the two rears are joined together at the multiplug !) so I replaced just that one by unpicking the pins from the multi-plug then sods law the other side went a week later !
