The cheap 18 quid HIDs I have in mine, when cold, give a full power flash for a small amount of time - maybe a 10th of a second, which seems to be enough for people to see (or for the car in front to think I'm plod and indicate to pull over lol) but they then drop to a dim light and do indeed take about 15 seconds to come up to full power from cold. When warm, they only take a couple of seconds to come back to full power. I've not found this to be a problem when driving through the New Forest, going to and from my mum's place. However, I'm using nightbreakers in my dipped beam which help.

I understand that not all HID kits work the same way as mine but thought it worth noting.

Thanks, the high beams ballast has apparently a connection to the batterie over the egnition.
As I read that, it is on permanent minimum power so the ballast powers the
Bulb to a minimum with the egnition is on.
If needed the usage of the flash would be 0,8 millisecond comparing to a h7 which is 0,5 millisecond.
So it should be ok. I will see when I install it how it is.

And yes , I actually have 15miles country roads every morning
With sometimes 2 or 3 cars coming .
Had some dears on the roadside this morning.
    Common problem on this road.

If its not what I want I go back to the 100w high beam and keep the hid as spares.
Or even use it on the GSX.

Ive used osram just night breakers before and wasnt that impressed, they weren't perceptively brighter and only lasted about 9 months in my Saab with DRLs.
I found Philips xtreme to be really good and much brighter than standard.

For OE bulbs you cant beat the normal Philips ones (orange packet) or if you use your DRLs alot then Ring do a long life bulb with a 3 year guarantee!

You'll find that when you flash people, the response of the ballast and bulb igniting is nowhere near quick enough and so you'll get a very faint flash and in my experience (with HIDs on my van) other drivers may not even notice you flashing them!
Stick with the oe high beam bulbs. TBH, the amount of time driving round with high beams actually on, doesn't warrant the HIDs being fitted. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere 20 miles from the nearest street lamp and no other cars around to come the other way.
Spot on advise there Lee. Saw a chap doing that the other day letting someone out at a junction and they just sat there looking at each other cos the flashes were so faint! Also, I am sure flashing and repeated high beam useage will not do the ballasts any good........
I have what Volvo call 'Bi Xenon' headlights, but my high beams are not HID's?? Dunno what thats all about.

Single xenon (in projector units) lights use a metal plate to produce the beam cut-off for a dipped beam. In bi-xenon lights the metal plate is attached to a solenoid which pulls the plate out the way producing the full beam.

Odd thing with the Osrams, in my 850 they are brilliant and so I also got some for the wifes Citroen C4 and they aren't so good ! (in fact the cheapy no-brand that they replaced were probably better ). I wonder if they produce better results in 'older' style headlights (perhaps those where the patterned lens produces the beam pattern) rather then newer generation stuff with clear lenses.

I forgot to mention, I have projector spotlights to the beam lights attached as well.
So even the hid will take a while to warm up by flashing, there always the spotlights next to the fogs.
They will flash instantly, and with 100w in them they can not be missed.
Had a go last night and they do the job fine.
Now I have to wait of the ballast for the high beams and try.

Will let you know what they like.
If they here by the weekend I may make a video while driving nights and and attach it.

Well bulbs arrived, fitted them this evening with before and after pics. Will post them up tomorrow from pc. Very impressed though. Turns out the one that had blown was a Philips with a blue tint to it so may have been a vision extreme. Osram 6k led side lights and nightbreaker bulbs now fitted. The light is very crisp to say the least.

Well, turns out they weren't as good as I thought. Both bulbs gone now so less than 12 months use out of them. Any more recommendations? Needs to be something I can buy today. Thanks
