    Volvo 760 TD-R :)

Hi guys, promised to put pics up a while ago after I bought a set of Titans from someone on here, and never got round to it.

Well, now I'm hunting for another Titan, as one of mine got smashed when I hit a patch of black ice (luckily at a fairly low speed, so no damage to the car, just cracked the back left wheel), but I thought I'd post some pics of my old oil-burner!

It's a UK 1990 760 TD (facelift model) - yes, the old rattly smokey VW 2.4 6-pot engine!!

    Spec from factory is:

    - 2.4ltr IDI VW 6 cylinder diesel
    - Facelift front end (940 style)
    - ZF22HP4 4 speed auto box
    - Intercooler
    - Electric sunroof
    - Electric Climate Control & Aircon
    - Tan Leather seats
    - Electric drivers seat
    - Nivomat rear shocks
    - 3.73 non-locking solid axle

Here's some pics when I got it:

Since I bought it I've made a few improvements:

    Engine:

    - Headgasket went, so fitted an Ajusa MLS 2 notch gasket and new bolts (still TTY bolts)
    - Timing belt/water pump/idler all replaced
    - IP timing set to 0.98mm
    - Injectors rebuilt with Monark 293 nozzles
    - MBC fitted and adjusted to 16psi
    - New cold start waxstat
    - Ground off collar and screwed main screw in a few turns
    - Reground the fuel pin
    - N/A inlet manifold
    - Rear silencer removed

    Suspension:

    - Spax rear 40mm lower springs
    - Front diesel springs chopped to 40mm lower
    - Bilstein TC shocks all round (getting rid of failed Nivos)
    - Swapped front 21mm anti roll bar for 22mm
    - Added rear 19mm anti roll bar
    - H&R 25mm DRM spacers
    - 17x7" Volvo Titan wheels
    - Front 215/45/17 Hankook V12; Rear 225/45/17 Goodyear Eagle;
    - Poly saucer bushes
    - Poly bushes on rear of track control arms (where they mount to rear part of inner wheel arch)

Here's a few pics of how it looks now, hopefully I'll get some better ones up at some point:

    Current: 1990 Volvo 760 GLE D24TIC ZF22 - 16psi, more fuel, Monark 293 nozzles, 40mm lower, Bilstein TCs, 22/19 ARBs, H&R DRM spacers, 17" Titans. Running Veg oil/petrol mix.

Does look nice, the wheels suit it imho and make the car look a little younger.

Interior don't look much different to an 850s.

But removing a silencer on an old diesel?? Is that a good idea??

Thanks guys! Agree with the comment about the autobox - would love to convert it over to a manual box at some point!

Removing the silencer on an old diesel doesn't really make much difference as they make a LOT less noise than petrols. As an example my 2.4TD with one silencer (had 2 from factory) makes significantly less exhaust note than my old 2.3 N/A (B230E) with 2 silencers (3 from factory). Also, diesels (especially turbos) don't need to keep certain levels of back pressure like a petrol does.

Also, because these are 6 cylinder, rather than the usual 4 cylinder, they actually sound good! Mine's just got a slight burble at idle now with rear silencer removed. If I was to replace the whole system with a 2.5" with a freeflow silencer it would sound more like a Cummins truck - youtube it (D24), you'll find plenty! This is on my list of to-dos, but I was kind of hoping my current exhaust would rot a bit so I could justify it!! Also, I need to look at modifying the fuel pump with a 12mm head/rotor as I think I'm close to maxing my pump out.

    Current: 1990 Volvo 760 GLE D24TIC ZF22 - 16psi, more fuel, Monark 293 nozzles, 40mm lower, Bilstein TCs, 22/19 ARBs, H&R DRM spacers, 17" Titans. Running Veg oil/petrol mix.

    Oh, bloody hell Ian,

This means I'm gonna have to do a project thread on the 960 now!!

I do like the look of yours though, it looks good on Titans, and just sits "right" with a 40mm drop

Hope you manage to find another wheel, maybe stick some wanted ads up here and on VOC (sorry for swearing guys!!)

Haha!! Cheers mate, I was on the fence between Volans and Titans, but definitely made the right choice - the big flat 5 spokes just suit the boxy car! Making an adjustable panhard rod (got all the bits now) so I can centre the back axle properly, and get the tracking setup properly. And I'm hoping when it warms a bit and I can afford a few bushes, and some new rear disks that I'll stick the 3.54 locker in!

Re: Titans - posted on VOC and no response. Posted on here, and I've found one in Brum already! Gotta pick it up, then get it refurbed same colour and I'll be all sorted!

    Job's a good-un!

Yeah, my -40mm springs have arrived for the 480, gonna be interesting to see how much the back axle moves ober!!

I'm expecting quite a lot, as 40mm is quite a lot of the suspension travel on a 400!! :s

Not so much cracked as smashed....

Don't think you could weld that could you? I've got another now thanks to Big G on here, just gotta get it coated the same colour as the rest!

Steve, if it works my DIY adjustable panhard rod will have cost me less than £50 all in - including poly bushes!
