They can be tightened much more and don't pinch

Dave after the money you have plowed into your car take the water pipe off either have it extended or moved with a ring on the end.
No matter how good of clamp u put on it will work its way off if there isnt enough surface to grab to, do the job right and you can forget about it bodge it and it will worrie you all the time

Well I've ordered the fancy clamp - I need the car for this weekend. I'll keep a close eye on it.

I will drain the system next week - get the pipe off & get it done properly - as you say.
