    serious power

say if i wanted to take a 850 t5 to the next level say to around a genuine 400hp what would need doing, i understand the rods are the weak point in 850's so is there another bottom end with stronger internals that you can fit the head on or is it a case of you have to strip and rebuild with stronger rods? also if you have the bottom end strong enough what turbo would you go for and would standard injectors be enough, obviously i know it would need some sort of custom mapping, anyone in the south west you can recommend?

lastly would the standard 5 speed gear box fit and it there a lsd you could recommend? does the t5r or 850r come with a lsd gearbox or is it aftermarket only?

    thanks very much

Cool, is it cheaper to get new rods fitted or is there a bottom end of a newer t5 that can cope and would fit?

To strip and rebuild a forged 850 engine would cost around £1300, a good turbo would be about same.

The s60r bottom end is forged and is good for 400bhp, all you have to do is drop a 850 head on it.

1996 850 T5 AWD - Self tuned M4.4 ECU with COP`s, B5254T ( S60R internals in a 850 block ) ostrich 2.0 , VXR injectors @ 3.8 bar, K24 turbo with a 6+6 compressor wheel, 3.25" MAF, top mounted Dump Valve, RN Exhaust manifold, 3" downpipe with 200 cell cat, 2.75" Stainless exhaust, Brembo calipers, S60R brake discs, stainless RIP kit, 3" Throttle body,

It costs slightly more than that,
my garrett was £1200, thats before any of the pipework,
Simens Deka 630cc injectors were £120,
Map, mines on a Turbo Tuner ECU, £300+ (mine was 2nd hand)
Brakes, I've got AP Racing £1200, then I had to get different wheels £600
    Rods are £500
You will need to think about a LSD for the 'box, either Gripper or Quaife or an 850R box

Its not a cheap upgrade, but once its done, it will be fun!

All the prices I put is what I paid for the bits on mine, if you can get them cheaper, even better.

If only it was that simple, a few people on here have spent £2500 and not managed 400bhp.

You can make it cheaper if you do all the work yourself - and quite a lot needs proper engineering works.

I am 80% through the process with my build project to install a GTX3071R garrett. Bearing in mind I spent over 1500 quid just getting the gearbox ready (not including the failures along the way) plus all the other supporting mods - stiffer ARBs better suspension etc. I think you can easily chew up 4K and probably more like 6K by the end.

    500 rods
    500 forged pistons
1300 rebuilt engine (bored, total overhaul, reworked head)
so 26 hundred gave me a bear block

    200 for a worked s60R manifold
Add to that cost of the turbo ~1600 - there are cheaper but if you are going down this route why bother?
800 quid custom D/p with race cat.
    170 actuator
    150 Tial BOV

Then you're going to need a proper clutch

    Injectors & a fuel pump - ???

    custom map - ???

I think Frankie's estimate is wildly under estimated.

Probably much easier to buy an s60 2.4 t5 and remap it - 320bhp easy peasy.

Dave, I'll say it again, but im expecting 500bhp from your setup, IMO with a few hardware tweaks and a proper ignition map mine would reach that, but after a few years its time to move on to something at the other end of the weight spectrum
