    strange noise at 40 mph

I`ve got this strange noise between 40-60 mph, the only way I can discribe it as it sounds like a deep droning sound.

Could this a wheel brg or the gearbox/diff ??

No, it starts at 40mph and is loudest up to 60mph then drops in noise over 60 mph but you still you still can hear it.

It doesn`t matter if you are accelerating or freewheeling it still there.

Sounds like a wheel bearing, that's the kind of noise mine had, jack up the front wheels and grab the suspension spring as you turn the wheel, you should be able to 'feel' if its the bearing.

Yep definately sounds like a wheel bearing, it doesnt need to change noise to be a front bearing either contrary to popular belief.

Exactly same symptoms as mine except I had the drone from 30mph to 70mph, N/S/F bearing shot.

I'd vote wheel bearing as well. I think mine are on the way out too because I'm getting a 'drone' as well, I think from the drivers side and mine also starts aty around 40mph!

Does it sound like a gale blowing constantly despite different road textures? If so you and I need to compare notes.....

    Regards

Yeah same here, i lugged a 250/300 kg load plus myself down to Hitchin the other day and mine have been droning since, starts at 50 then fades in gently then cuts out at 75.

I know I've said this before but first thing to do is check your tyres aren't out of shape. They tend to go on the inner edges, run the flat of your hand against the tread, if it feels uneven then the tread blocks have started to lift. It's difficult to describe, but I reckon 50 percent of the suspect wheel bearing noises that we get in at work ends up just being a dodgy tyre.

Mine have been checked regularly and I keep an eye on them, there's about 5mm on the tyres so I can rule out tyre issues with mine. I can hear the tyre noise changing with different road surfaces but then there is a constant 'airy' sound going on and it's loudest at 40mph.

Doesn't matter about tread depth, I've seen tyres fail like this when they look like they have only covered a few thousand miles, seems more common on the rear but not always.

I've checked my tyres and they're ok. Unfortunately the O/S front wheel has left and right play and given the ball joints were changed in September along with the outer track rod ends and wishbones, I think I'm safe to assume my wheel bearing is on its way out. I've yet to check the passenger side but I'll be posting a video or two on the forum later on today showing the problems.

    Regards

    James
