    V50 T5 with Rica

Has anyone driven one of these?

Stock they are 220bhp, but post chip they are putting out 320bhp.

In stock form is it an identical lump to the V70 one?

Does anyone know if the AWD setup is the haldex one - I'm thinking yes.

    Cheers

320 is the standard torque in Nm, not the power. Power goes to about 250 bhp with the ECU upgrade.

I would expect that the AWD is Haldex based.

I don't think that the engine is quite the same? Adam??

    Sorry, misread the stats page!

250BHP is the new figure, a little underwhelming, and must be a fundamentally different engine then?

It's less than 20cm shorter than a V70, interior loadspace length down by less than 10cm, looks like a rather good buy by all accounts.

Murphy - Haldex is an independent company, Haldex is that the current V70R uses.

Oh i see - it works very well on the Golf R32 and the Octavia 4x4 so i have been told , but people doubt the older V70R AWD. Did it have a different system ?

We looked at a cut away model of the Haldex system at Daventry - very trick piece of kit. Consists of an electro-hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch which is set just in front of the rear diff. The car is permanently FWD but the power can be pushed backwards into the rear drive shafts when required, via a prop shaft. This prop shaft spins continually - although the power take off is not always engaged.
    Very cool!

The older AWD consisted of a viscous coupling and was prone to wear/failure when the tyres front to back got out of wear sync by a few mill.

    Just a thought,
could this engine be the same as that to be used in the new Fockus ST??

I have a friend who works for Volvo in Sweden - I suppose I should drop him a mail to ask really

    Ok, so here's the crack.

The V50 T5 actually uses the 2.5T engine from the V70, in the V70 it puts out 210BHP, and in the V50 220BHP, so they must have tweaked it a touch.

This is backed up if you look in the 2 brochures, the compression ratio for the V70 T5 is 8:5:1, and for the 2.5T it is 9:0:1.

The V50T5 is also 9:0:1, and there is no 2.5T in the range......

Oh and apparently every 4WD Volvo from 03 is fitted with the same Haldex system.

Yeah the T5 engine in the V50 shares virtually nothing with the proper T5 engines unfortunately, Volvo have done that as people are now more conscious of fuel consumption and the bigger engine would cause shed loads of torque steer in the FWD S40/V50 T5's.

    ...although I though the new T5's ( S60 in particular ) use a/the 2.5T ? Am I wrong ? Is it still the 2.3 ?

The reason I ask is that the S60r is a 2.5T isn't it and the 2005 T5 uses the same engine - hence VT can tune it to 340BHP ?

I guess we are also talking about 2.5T light pressure turbo thingys....oh, my head hurts now!

I was under the impression T5 engines 03+ were 2.4 (260 standard 6 speed box)?

    God knows....

Come on Volvo, keep it simple an put the T5 engine in all models and varients!!!

Well if its got 5 cylinders and a turbo its a T5, even if its a LPT, regardless of displacement there all derived from a similar lump, after all the R is still a T5
    T = turbo 5 = cylinders

All T5 engines are 2319 ccs until you get to the B5254FT engine as featured in the Phase 2 Rs.

IMHO the V50 T5 is a con. It is a LPT with a badge.
