    She failed the Mot today!!!!

To be fair I knew she may need four tyres but I didn't expect the excessive blue smoke from the exhaust! I hadn't noticed anything while driving but apparently it filled to test station!!

Drove her back home no smoke, let her idle for a bit and you can see a bit starting to come out, the strange thing is it smells like brake fluid? which is what tester said.

So what is it? all fluids are ok, I'm going to investigate further tomorrow but ideas greatfully received.

My first thought was turbo seals but never thought of valve stem seals!!
Any way of confirming which it is?

if its blue smoke then its either the rings or valve seals, if its constant it would be rings if its only on idle this would point to seals, my v70r was the same

My 850 has been like that now for over 30k only puffs a bit out when its been idleing for a while then clears its never failed a mot due to it so don't know why yours has unless they failed it on emmisions

Yep, mine was the same until I changed the turbo. would get gradually worse the longer the car was idling.

If your brake fluid is going down it could be the master cylinder leaking into the servo then getting sucked into the engine throught the vacuum line, just pull the vacuum pipe to see if it's dry inside.

As the other guys have said sounds like valve stem seals, have you tested the PCV system.

Sounds like it could do with a oil change ,just go up a couple of grades that should help if it's a bit border line case.

I had a nissan 200sx and when it was hot and left idle for a while sometimes it would start to smoke most of the time it was fine. Check first thing in the morning when you start it if there is any smoke, if there isnt then the valve stem seals are fine. Youll probably find its the turbo if it only does it when warm on idle thats what was wrong with my 200sx.

I always thought blue smoke on over run was valve stem seals, turbo under load.

    I may be wromg though!

if your car smokes first thing in the morn then clears usually valve stem seals as the oil seeps through to the cyclinders when its left for a while, it wont usually smoke when warm and running from the seals unless there completely disintergrated which i wouldnt of thought they would be never seen it before anyway. Yes turbos can smoke on boost but they can on idle ive had it happen.

My Mrs had a very similar thing happen last week, while sitting in traffic her car(V70 T5) started pumping out loads of blue smoke enough to cover 3 cars behind and in front so very similar to what the MOT lads said about yours, her's also cleared itself after a few mins and didnt return but thought i should investigate....this it what i found....

Suggest you start with the PCV mate

It does seem to be a common problem with them as said mynes done about 30k like it which for me who does 5k a year so been doing it a while I fitted a brand new turbo to my car when I upgraded and that never cured the problem I would have thought if it were rings it would smoke all the time it just seems to be when the engine is at its lowest pressure it seeps oil from some where and builds up and then when you set of you get a cloud of smoke and then all clears in my car or hasn't affected the running or emmisions also my oil level always stays the same so not loosing much so couldn't be bothered refurbing the head for a bit of smoke after idle

Yeah good start. Check that first if thats all ok then i think its going to be the turbo, if it was the rings it would do it all the time. That was another problem with the 200sx oil build up in the breather pipes so we fitted a one valve in it but it didnt cure it. Changed the turbo and all ok.

When was your PCV last done? if you dont know then for the sake of £96 (price from my local stealer) for the parts and about 3-4 hrs if it's your 1st time i would get it done mate, easy do able with a socket set with long extenstion and a wobbly bit

I renewed all the PCV system when I got the car in 07 and its done 20k since and I flushed the engine at the last oil change in June, I did pull the dipstick and there wasn't any smoke puffin out.

I'll do a cold start tommorow and see if she smokes then take it for run.
