    '78 66 GL Barn find

I picked this up at the weekend, a 1978 66 GL

Shell seems to be in good condition and all parts are there to complete with the exception of the front windscreen and rear bumper.

Managed to get the engine turning over on the battery and I reckon it will start with some fresh petrol. Just have a lot of projects on my hands at the minute and haven't had time to look at it properly.

Looks like some behind the Iron curtain Lada/DAF §§§§ box.

Thought barn finds were parked up and untouched time capsules, this is missing door cards and is covered in primer??

Best of luck with it however

That's probably because they also got re-badged as DAF's !. ....hmm, a T5 engine running through the variomatic gearbox would be fun.........for a short while !

I remember as a child of the 70's the next door neighbour having the DAF version. She traded it in and the car dealer revved it in the car park and put it in the wall, wrote it off; he'd never experienced that sort of gearbox. lol Didn't that style of gearbox make an appearance in a VW recently??

I remember driving a rally spec one of those years ago when i worked at the dealer. Had full roll cage and side draught webbers. That thing was a beast and sounded the nuts!!

These gearboxes have been used for years (or rather a variation of them).. They call them CVT's (constantly variable transmission) but the 'belts' are internal within the gearbox and not rubber but resemble a steel V belt. Ford have used them for years as have Fiat and VAG have been using them on the back of longitudinally mounted engines but unfortunately the vag units aren't very well regarded ! A far more similar arrangement to the Variomatic is used in Axiam type microcars where the belts and pulleys are external with the pulleys bolted on to a centrifugal clutch. If anyone is tempted by one of these microcars.......don't, they are unreliable, overpriced, unreliable, noisy, unreliable and slow (did I mention unreliable ?) as one of my customers found out !
