How difficult is it to get inside an ecu and solder in your own chip?

A steady hand and the right amount of confidence and you'll be fine mate.

Don't know about Volvo ECU but used to do golf Mk2 quite often, as MRP said its just a steady hand. I'm sure you'll be fine.

The motronic 4.4 has a plcc32 chip.
The standard chip is soldered to the board so you need to remove that one first, then solder a plcc32 socket in. Then all you need to do is program an chip and pop it in.
The hard bit is the map on the chip......

LOL MRP, can't think about food right now, just been eating icing nom nom nom, and now feel sick
The ecu top has 4 metal tabs, just prise them open and lift the lid off. Then this is what is inside, the eprom is down the bottom in the red box
Soldering a socket on is not as easy as you would think

You'll need a hot air station for the M4.4.
Been there, done that but for the novice, get a mobile phone repairer to get it out for you

Have my exchange ECU comming from hamish this week (car 1998 P1 cable 2.5LPT auto) I see there is a metel band around the box ..when I remove the band and get into the box, any special way to remove the single ECU and swop in the Chiped one ??? thanks Kim
To remove the strap, use a saw blade to make a groove on the rounded rivet-like fastener. With the groove done, just use a "minus" screwdriver to remove the fastener (recycle it). The ECM (sitting in the middle slot) can then be taken out by just pulling the lever. Assembly is just the reverse.
However it was mentioned that your insurers might not like it if the mentioned fastener has been tampered with - as the anti-theft system has been compromised.

Try the following. The values on the left are your original. The right part has been modified.
I do not know what temperature you're having but if starting problems is faced during cold, increase the values.
If you have problem starting warm, reduce them. By right a newer car should have a temperature sensor in the MAF but our 850s MAF do not have one.
Couldn't you adjust the cold start values?
