    MPG Question ?

My trip computer tells me that my average MPG is 21.
This is fairly consistent tank after tank. the gauge says the tank holds 15 gallons.
So if all this info is correct i should get by my calculations 315 miles out of a tank.
I'm actually getting around the 240 mark, which equates to 16 MPG.
I just wondered what other peoples experiences were with the trip computer regarding acuracy. Also if i am averaging 16 and not 21 mpg then surely there is a problem with the car.

Thats just what it is, average, sometimes lower, sometimes higher, dont forget to allow for acceleration, start up warm up, air con, lights on...etc as they all load the engine and therefore use fuel.
If its any consolation mines about the same and running fine

don't forget that you'll never use all 15 gallons (unless you run out).
I'd recalculate based on assuming empty as having 1 gallon left.
Reset your trip comp and try again.

    Fun in the twisties!

BEST WAY TO REALLY CHECK IS FILL IT TO THE BRIM..... RUN IT TO RESERVE, THEN FILL IT UP AGAIN, THEN CALCULATE THE MPG, THAT WAY YOU KNOW EXCATLY HOW MUCH FUEL AND HOW FAR YOU HAVE BEEN...

AND DON'T BELEIEVE THE "MILES" LEFT COUNTER, I RAN OUT AT 15 LEFT!! QUITE UPSETTING, ALTHOUGH I WAS ONLY 200 YARDS FROM HOME AT THE TIME...

Hi Steve - how are ya ?!?!?

Well i also have an auto estate that is reading 21 mpg at the moment. This will achieve around 265 miles, and cost £52 to fill having achieved that millage. The fuel costs .89p / litre x 5 / 1.1 = £4.05 / gallon (optimax). £52 / £4.05 = 12.84 gallons.

MPG = 20.64 mpg - so not too bad on accuracy !

    Thumbs up

    Write_T5 is right,

If you fill it to the top, zero your trip, run it to reserve or near abouts and then fill it to the top (but keep the reciept from the petrol station as that will tell you exactly how much fuel you have used rather than the guage in yer car).

Using the distance traveled from your trip (assuming you haven't gone for tiny or ubermassive wheels) and the actual amount of fuel used, acurate calculation is easy....

And mine is about the same and healthy now (Cheers Justin)....

Enjoy the performance, the consumption seems to stay pretty much the same. If we'd wanted economy we'd have all bought a diesels!

I must drive like a Grandad! Current average mpg is 25.2, I usually get towards 300 miles on the clock between refills. Most of those miles are motorway at 80mph, err - I mean 70mph - where was that Copper :-))

Indeed, Payday, I can't bring myself to fill it up!!! plus why do I want to drag all that weight about!!! I found it quite hard, cos although I RAN out 200 yards from home the problem started 5 miles away when I booted it onto the bypass, then it started messing about and I had a hill to climb on the way home.... I nursed it for ages, I must have had people mad cos I was only doing 10 miles and hour jerking along, hoping I could get home!!!!

Never again.... till the next time

ROTFLMAO!!! Nice one....I know what you mean, you think you can make it so you just keep your foot on the throttle even though the cars doing funny things!!

Ive never run out of petrol in a car but I have on a motorbike quite a few times. Its always on the bikes with fuel taps. I have put it onto reserve the last time i used it and fogotton i have put it onto reserve the next time i came to use it.

    Ditto...

Problem happens with electric reserve too, I have an FJ1200 which has an electric pump for fuel, problem is the reserve swicth gets used soo little that it doesn't work realiably, then when you need it, ie: the bike starts spitting and hic-cuping along, the dam switch doesn't work, then you get slower and slower.... till it catches, as the fuel gets through.. then back into top gear..... Yeah!!! love em...

Problem is I find I am driving the T5 faster than the bike

Fun burning bikes off the line
